Definitely military, you can tell by the headstamp. If I had to guess, I would say they were training rounds of some type.

blanks? specifically to use with those red things that go in the barrel that let the gun cycle. The stuff we used in our belted guns for training looked alot like that

Do the cases mostly look like 5.56, or 7.62 NATO?

While hunting at Camp Pendelton I saw mounds of those pitched into the brush.
Looked like someone got tired of hauling them around lol.

They look like blanks, those red things are BFA's and the whole military gear thing is called Miles gear.

M240G on the M1A1 Abrams, right.

The Army has a different variant for Army Infantry of the M240B designation.

Oh-crap, there a BUNCH of variants:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M240_machine_gun

(HEAT, and APFSDS, even the practice rounds are HEAVY after about 25 of them if you are pulling ammo!)

If I recall correctly the M1A1 also (other than the main gun) has a M2 .50 cal mounted too, right?

Most Marines hate firing blanks. Cleaning the weapon after firing blanks is a pain.

Looks like belted .308 blanks. Get this, that BELT is considered a HIGH CAP mag so keep it in one piece... I have an EXACT belt that I found in my garage. I just had it hanging around (literally...) I THINK mine are .308 anyways. I need to shoot one in my ptr and see what happens.

We used to find belts of those all the time when I was a kid, camping with the Boy Scouts on land previously used for military training (near Quantico, VA). They are definitely blanks. If I remember right, they had a small amount of powder in them and a red cardboard plug in the end (to hold the powder in place).
