Default Hornandy LnL AP shell plate question

I'm an experienced loader with a single stage press. I've recently started loading with the AP. I've loaded over 1k rnds of .40 so far with outstanding results. I would like to start reloading .224 but don't have the #16 shell plate yet. I'm not to interested in paying $100 for one either.

I've already deprimed/primed 200 .223 cases using the .40 shell plate and haven't seen anything out of the ordinary.

My question for all the grey-beards is: can you see there being any issue using the .40 shell plate for .223?

I would think not a problem if it works. Im interested if the shells would bind more on the prime or resize though

You will have problems trying to seat primers if you plan on using the .40S&W shell plate for .223. The shell plate holds the brass in place as you press the primers into position.

He could hold the case in the proper place by hand

I've found priming .223 is always a pain in the butt on any press.....

He could try to do so but the 223 case would not be lined up with the primer punch for it to work. Besides why would you want to hold onto a case in close proximity exposing your hand to potential damage from a primer going off?

The OP just needs to buy the correct shell plate. He would be able to reload a lot faster by not trying to rig some method up to prime cases.

Just a heads up. Amazon shows the #16 shellplate available w/ free shipping for $35.33. Note: They claim a 2 to 5 week shipping window.
