Default Hipster Guide to Gun Laws

Saw a guy at USI shooting a glock 17 with a forward grip attached.
I told him that was a criminal offense, and he should probably take it off before someone sees it. Dumb law though it may be, there's no reason to get arrested over it.

A few minutes later, he comes back and tells me that he "asked a guy and he said they repealed that law" and he looked it up. I asked where he looked it up and he responded - the CIA world fact book.

What? The CIA world fact book?
I asked if he checked with someone who actually regulates firearms, like the ATF, or the California DOJ. He responded, "Well, they're a federal agency, they would know." I suggested that he verify it with the FDA or FCC, both also federal agencies.

He replied that it isn't even his gun, so it doesn't matter; and he just thought I should know that it wasn't in effect anymore. I informed him that "possession" was a criminal offense, since adding a forward grip to a pistol makes it an illegal "assault weapon" under the California AWB.

He rolled his eyes and said, "Okay man, whatever."

The owner of the pistol was smart enough to take the advice, look it up, and immediately remove the grip.

Anyone else notice a run of hipsters at the ranges these days?
Judging from the people that have been at USI my last few trips, I wasn't sure if it was a gun range or a starbucks.

By definition, a gun hipster is someone who should enjoy using older or obtuse firearms. But maybe you used the label derisively. What you encountered is just an idiot.

My mistake; he had costumed himself to resemble John Lennon, so I assumed I could refer to him as a "hipster".

Here is an artist's rendering of the idiot.

It's just a picture of Lennon, but it bears a significant resemblance.

^^This^^ They'll be serious and get something like a Hi-Point and the have it plated and then engraved with various pictures of their fixies/self portaits of newly-gauged ears, or their sweet new items they got off of Etsy, kind of like nose art on planes in WW2.

Maybe he wanted to be able to defend himself in case Chapman saw him.

Oh, by all means then, carry on. I'm trying with every fiber of my being to resist making light of the musician's death - just thought I would throw that in for continuity's sake.

That makes me wonder... Think Etsy sells anything gun-related?

Well on the first point, I made a reference to it. On the second point: I don't know. Maybe a hand-knit gun cozie?

Because the last thing we need is an idiot making the rest of us look bad with "hi cap assault clipz pistol with infant-seeking bullets." I think OP was trying to help and be nice and instead got some idiot thinking his stuff didn't stink.

Paracord rifle sling, for one. It was suggested to me by a female family member that I could sell paracord items on etsy. I did a search, and found that the prices were so low, there wasn't any reason to go to the trouble, since the profit would be negligible compared to the amount of work necessary to make a rifle sling. Etsy is full of factory-manufactured crap these days.

Anyone had the chance to shoot while Oak Tree is doing their "Living Social" group deals? Talk about some interesting newbies.

Indeed, but of course they repealed that law - check the CIA world factbook

To Sayam and war veteran:
As DasBoost noted, it doesn't help the 2A cause to have an idiot with an illegally modded gun walking around in plain sight. Nor does it help anyone for said idiot to be arrested for such an absurd law purely because he's too stupid to look it up.

I think he did the right thing. If I was there with a borrowed pistol that was illegal and didn't know it, I would like to have someone tell me.

I don't and can't know all if the crazy laws.

Keep up the good work and thank you for your public service. I think LEO's like you are in short supply. Those that care for the people

My favorte handguns are 1911s, Hi-Powers, P7M8s and revolvers. Does that make me a gun hipster?

We need to self police our community or the MAN will! I am forever warning people who bring their children to the range about lead contamination, on several occasions I have seen children sitting on the floor and or eating candy at the local indoor range. Also, gun safety is everybody’s responsibility, we have all seen bullet holes where they do not belong at the local range.

Cheers,
W-W

What ever political, religious, social, or economic class the person belongs to, any gun owner would be someone I'd strike up a conversation with.

Why all the anti-hipster smack talk?

These are NEW gun owners, and the future of our rights depends on people like them.

Don't be stupid and turn them away.

We need the hipsters on our side. If we scare them away, they will continue to vote for Anti gun politicians. Just because they dress, or look funny, they shouldn't be excluded from the shooting community. Lets be honest, I'm sure we could all post a pic of an avid shooter that is dressed silly, so no need to post any pics, because we've all seen it. When I was younger I had to put up with a lot of resistance from the gun community, but I hung in there anyway, because I am a stubborn SOB. 20 years ago, I was the little brown kid buying gun parts in a gun store filled with old white guys. Now that the community has become more diverse, we need to give the newbies the best info we can. If they choose not to listen, they will learn fast , the consequences of being ignorant.

I think you did the right thing OP. You probably saved those guys from having a potential bad experience by getting busted with that thing on. On a lighter note...a forward grip on a Glock 17...too funny.

much to my surprise there actually is a CIA World Factbook. But not surprisingly there is no section or reference to firearms laws.

So true! I try to be as accepting as possible and as informative as possible. It was the same thing with me 15-20 years ago in San Diego. There was this one gun store on Convoy near what used to be Dream Girls, you know the one, right? I always got a bad vibe whenever I went in to talk about what I might want. But these days? Wherever I go, whether it's Turner's, Parallax Tactical, Poway Weapons and Gear, Duncan's .. it's all good. So diverse nowadays. I see all sorts of people wanting and buying guns, makes a guy feel good. White guys, brown guys, black guys, asian guys, women of all sorts, big, small, tall, short, it's like an international gun convention some days. The gun shop: a true melting pot.

amen to that. while i don't consider myself a hipster (i think 41 is too old), i live on the westside of LA and just getting into shooting handguns. i just signed up for a year membership at oak tree gun club and was just up there shooting a glock 19 and a 17 a couple of hours ago, it's a really great place.

i'm an avid rock climber and i see the same "looking down on the newbie" rockclimbers as well by the more seasoned climbers. i've never understood why experienced people make fun of newbies, regardless of sport, maybe they are just terribly insecure.

we were all newbies one time in our lives so and we should embrace those that take a beginning interest in our sport of choice, whether it be guns, rockclimbing, or underwater basket weaving

I'll say this regarding the "anti-hipster" talk: On my end, I was just giving the stereotype a hard time, not trying to turn them away and joking with others on here; that being said, if that person refuses to follow the laws and display common sense even after someone tried to help them, then by all means we should not embrace them. That's just more fodder for the Antis at that point if we allow those that refuse to be responsible and know the laws to be associated with us just because they own firearms too. That's like owning a daycare and having Casey Anthony as a spokeswoman because she was mother too; it's not a smart move for the business/cause.

OP, I think you did the right thing. After all, the owner did fix the issue, hopefully they'll educate their selves more of the gun laws because of this incident.

People, chill out and stop giving noobs a hard time- we need them- no matter how tight or baggy their sisters pants look on them

IMO, responsible shooters help guide noobs to also become good responsible shooters; the more diverse our group becomes the better it is for the future of the 2A and our sport.

Just imagine the possibilites if the word "hip" became synonymous with shooting sports.

I think Oleg Volk did a great job with the concept of hipsters and new shooters.
