Default Horrible smelling ammo...

Not exactly a range story, but, it did take place at a range. So, hopefully this is still the appropriate place to post this...

A buddy and I went to a popular indoor range in San Diego today, it was my first time to this facility. Really good looking place, nice lanes, showroom, etc... We're firing away and then the guys next to us get going too. All of the sudden, I'm smelling burned powder that absolutely sinks. I look over and every shot these guys take, dark gray smoke is billowing out of the gun they're shooting. I lean over and ask one of them what kind of ammo they're using and was told they were reloads purchased there. Jokingly, I said that they were probably going to have their hands full cleaning up afterwards. The guy smiled and said that they were rentals that they were using.

So, here's the question: What the hell was that stuff? I'm tellin' ya', outside of black powder, that was some of the dirtiest stuff I've ever seen! And the smell...... I still can't get it off of me, LOL!!

I ca shoot hundreds of rounds of .45ACP factory ammo out of my 1911 with no problem, but when I go to an un named indoor range any buy their reloads I can shoot less than 100 rounds before I start having issues due to a dirty gun.

I was at an outdoor range a few weeks ago and somebody was shooting something similar. Lots of smoke, and it smelled horrible, like burning plastic diapers. I assume he was shooting reloads, but I have no idea what kind of powder smells like that.

I actually like the sulfur smell of black powder, but this was completely different.

Cast lead bullets? The lube produces a lot of smoke, although it generally doesn't smell too terrible. I've known Wolf .22lr ammo to be very foul smelling though.

Just smear some Vick's Vapo Rub under your nose and bring Febreze along next time to spray now and then.

This happened to me when I was shooting Tula ammo! It smelled horrible and then my gun started to smoke. I thought it was a problem with my gun, but then the problem stopped when I switched to my regular Federal rounds...

During the last ammo panic, I bought a couple of bricks of Centurion .22LR. Besides being pretty weak, they smelled very odd when fired. I'd bet on the (cheap) powder.

Remington Golden Bullets have a nasty odor... reminds me of a phart. If this ammo shortage keeps up, I'll have to use those someday. Otherwise they're staying in the bottom of the pile.

The guy I saw was shooting a .40 or .45 pistol. Or maybe that should be pharty or pharty-five.

Probably just cheap reloading components to cut costs down. Wolf ammo stinks pretty bad like ammonia and burns my eyes, which is also made cheaper.

I've got some South African .303 ball from 1960 that could gag a maggot.

I do not get that smell shooting Wolf from my AK(though I have little Wolf ammo left due to better alternitaves), that said, I shot my friends AK(he was not using Wolf), but better quality reloadable brass ammo(PMC), and I strongly got the ammonia smell in my face. Mind you his AR is a lefty, I am not! I thought it was more of the rifle than the ammo. Then I shot my FIL's AR(RAW), and still got the strong ammonia smell in my face! The ammo he was using was from the early 90's when he bought it.

What gives with the AR's I have shot giving off that strong smell?

I think i know what range you're talking about. I've actually shot that reloaded ammo through my .45. All they had for ammo at the time was lead reloads. It stunk, it's smoked like crazy, and it was a ***** to clean after.
