Default CF SSD - IDE Replacement?

Anyone done this with a laptop? Just curious how it worked out. I've got (2) laptops here I'd like to keep running, and the CF/IDE adaptors caught my eye on ebay versus a PATA/SSD.

Also, I'd like to know how CF cards are graded as far write and read speeds. Seems there is some controversy and differing standards.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Even the fastest one will be ridiculously slow. I tried it once and it was painful to boot.

Did that once for a desktop running a linux build as a firewall, slowest thing I've ever seen. Ran great once everything was in RAM, but CF for storage is just painfully slow, even the "fastest" CF cards are horrible.

Wow... It looks like the max xfer rate of a CF is 167 Mbyte/s

SSDs are at 6 Gbyte/s

Slow is an understatement...

Total waste of time. In addition to the fact that you've got a 6Gbps SATA bus, SATA SSDs also have cache and the data is striped across multiple chips. The larger the drive capacity, the faster.

Don't even bother.

Just to clarify, not SATA, just PATA-IDE for an older laptop.

Found some youtube videos that make it appear that the CF-IDE adaptor approach is much faster for loading programs on a basic laptop.

Seems more research is needed...

Throw it out and find a cheap SATA laptop that's 3-5 years old.
