Default Need a place to shoot around Stockton

I have been shooting at the ranges in Linden and Manteca for a while now, and while they are great and serve their purpose, I really need to get away and find a place to just relax and shoot my .22 and .17.

The amount of hassle and money it takes to just go punch paper is frustrating. Growing up as a kid on a ranch, I'm used to just roaming a field picking off diggers. Or, setting up interesting targets. Of course, I clean everything up and I respect the land.

It just seems that the areas to do this are shrinking and disappearing all the time. Where can a guy just through the .22 in truck, find a field, and squeeze a couple off? Searches on the BLM site have been useless...

Apparently we can shoot anywhere in Stockton...hear it every night...kidding of course as its actually very annoying. Asshats dont realize they do eventually come back down.

We used have the Pavillion indoor...you guys remember that place off of Hammer Lane?
Now its Linden or Manteca unless you can find a land owner east side of 99 for outdoors.

The problem that lies with shooting on private property is that the landowner is responsible for anything that may happen. This is California and is chock full of bloodthirsty lawyers waiting to tell someone they are a victim. I would open up a desolate ranch to you folks but everytime I shoot out there the sheriffs department shows up and tells me someone is complaining of gunfire. It's perfectly legal, but takes away from the more important tasks the San Joaquin county sheriffs department may have at hand.

I'm still trying to coordinate another calguns event sometime in 2013. The last one was 2011.

Looks like about a 2 hour drive to shooting on NF land. That's what I do, and make a day of it (I go from Rohnert Park up to the Mendocino NF, but same distance).

I would assume not since the DFG website allows hunting with shotguns and bows only. I'd just play it safe to avoid any legal encounters for "hunting in an illegal manner" or something like that.

This. We go up Highway 4 past Dorrington if we want to shoot longer, out to about 400 yards in one spot. No fees. No restrictions. Easy access if you have a truck, wouldn't take a Prius though.

Ran into a Calaveras County Deputy once, he was cool about his approach even with me wearing a .45 on my hip. We talked about guns, kids shooting guns, and good places to hunt. Gave him a can of Diet Pepsi and he was down the road.

I save the local ranges almost exclusively for pistol shooting when there's too much snow on the ground up higher.

Actually I always go in my Prius.... dirt NF roads and all. My friends joke that it's the Prius Jeep, cause I regularly take it on roads not maintained for passenger vehicles (sign on the road of a sedan with a slash through it that says "NOT RECOMMENDED").

Do you just head in to the woods via forestry service fire road?

I wouldn't suggest shooting in the national forest especially up near Dorrington. There are a lot of us that wheel the forest roads in the snowy months and if you don't know what's beyond your target, like another road, then you should not be shooting.

Exactly this. As long as you're on National Forest Land, it is legal to target shoot. Some places have specific rules and exemptions, so it would be wise to stop by a ranger station, ask about restrictions, and get a forest service relief/topographical map of the area.

Ask a ranger about places to shoot, go exploring...take a fishing rod. You never know when you'll come across a nice creek or small lake that's full of fish.

I can turn you on to a few spots, send me a PM if you want info.

So because you ride up there, you don't want others to shoot? I respect your right to ride up there and though I don't expect the same from you regarding legal shooting, I will continue to shoot up there.

In a gun forum, I think safe shooting goes without saying. To preach "backstop, between, and beyond" to this crowd could be construed as patronizing, but I suppose it bears repeating.

Know your backstop, know what's between your muzzle and the backstop, and know what's beyond the backstop should you fire an errant round.

I also understand about not wanting to get shot (at) ... I ride up there too. However, this is multi-use land. There are numerous places around Dorrington where you can safely shoot into a hillside, hollow, or gulch even from a little distance.

However, the place I go to stretch out some shots is higher up and follows a straight clearing cut for power lines that measures about 375 yards. There's 10'-15' high dirt pile off to one side that makes a great back stop.

But there are also some good spots to shoot several miles behind Whitepines Lake, out past Sourgrass, and west/north of 4 between Dorrington and Cottage Springs.

Charter Way, Wilson Way, Fremont Ave and Okieville(East Stockton). Sorry I had to get it out.

If you call this number they should be able to help (916) 941-3101. This for the Mother Lode Field Office.

The only reason I mention it is because I have had bullets whiz past me on several occasions. The forest roads are a maze among clearings and heavily wooded areas and among these areas are several rocks that have been pushed into the backstop piles and can cause ricochets. You guys have fun driving hours to shoot, I will enjoy my backyard.

I don't know what your place looks like, but you shoot in your backyard? ... And you don't want me shooting up in the backwoods of National Forest land?

Sounds a little ***-backwards to me.

You don't know what my place looks like. Its private property and about 300 acres of it. As opposed to getting shot at on public property.

Private vs public. There's nothing backwards about it at all. You need to straighten out your priorities.

I wish I could be like you and have 300 acres of private property. Unfortunately, my daddy isn't an almond farmer or peach farmer.

The rest of us will have to shoot at either public ranges or on public land.
