Default New Pistol For Fiance

Hi All,
My fiance has been hunting with me for 5-6 years and now she wants to get into pistol shooting. The only pistol I have that really fits her is an old Makarov.

I also want this gun to function as our HD gun that can sit in the nightstand and the Makarov isn't very reliable. I recently transfered an XDM .45 and was planning on using that as my HD night stand gun, but found out Saturday that my fiance isn't strong enough to rack it back.

So basically I have a great excuse to purchase a new gun. I am thinking a 9mm would suit her well. She is a small woman with smaller hands, about 5-6, 125 so I need a medium to small size framed gun that is light. The 4.5" XDM looks like a desert eagle in her hands...

I have been reading a lot of reviews on here the last few days but wanted to check in and see if any of you had first hand experience with a similar gun for the ladies.

I am willing to spend up to $1k but would like to keep it less.

Any advice/recommendations are appreciated.

Take her to a Range and let her rent a few to try them out. As to racking the slide, has she tried holding the slide with her left hand and pushing the gun forward with her right hand?

She may find this video interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q8ZRlkdWVc

M&P or HK P30 would be good choices. Both weapons have changeable backstraps and in the case of the HK, changeable side straps too. Someone with large hands can shoot a handgun with a small grip, but the reverse is not necessarily true.

Ultimately however she must be the one to pick what fits her hand.

I just my wife a Sig p229 with the E2 grips she has small hands and it fits her perfect. But we came to that choice after we did what socal bob said and spent a day at the range trying different guns.

I bought my wife a Sig 2022 light well balanced also comes with 2 different size grips that snap on easy. We prefer DA/SA over striker fire but did like the XD's trigger and feel. When we go out shooing she will shoot 200+ rounds and never complains about it beating her up or making her tired. Also can't beat the quality for the price.

i am a woman with guns and this is the best advice so far.
what fits her hand in the gun shop may not be comfortable when firing.
and, consider a revolver!

If you want .45, what about a single stack. My 16 year old daughter's (petite) favorite gun is a P220 Combat. Find one here used for under a grand. With practice she'll be able to rack any slide.
Renting is fin, in my worthless opinion, for grip and feel, but not accuracy or reliability. Filthy as all get out.

Thanks for all of the great advice/recommendations. I think we will head to the range and rent a few of these models and try them out.

I'll have her try racking per socalbob's advice as well.

+1 for HK P30/P30L. The HK is pricey, but the interchangeable back/side straps and ergonomics on it are fantastic. My girlfriend has yet to handle anything that she likes better than my P30L (me either for that matter).
Definitely best for her to try out as much as possible too...

Rent her some to try out. Good options would be:
Ruger SR9
M&P9
XD9
CZ P01
EMP 9mm
G17/19
Sig SP2022

I like to think thats why he asked, for suggestions to rent.

My hands arent too strong but I can rack my M&P40 fs just fine. Pushing it like this person suggests is an idea as well. The rippling on the rear of the slide gave me something to grip on when id push the frame forward.

Keep in mind a new gun will be a bit stiff. When she brings it home, clean/lube it and rack it a bunch to help loosen it a bit. Bunch of rounds down range should help.

Check out the Walther PPQ. However, nearly every woman I have taught to shoot eventually preferred a revolver.

What about a walther PPS? Anyone or their wives/gf have experience with those? It's a sub-c but seems to be a contender.

Like many have suggested, take her to a range that will rent them.

If you cant or dont do that then atleast take her to the gun shop and let her hold all the ones she wants and I would go with the one that "feels best" to her.

I did the same for my wife and she loves her XD9. Good Luck!

My wife isn't too keen on the Glock platforms after shooting them, but she likes my P30 grip (.40). She also liked the USPc frame, so I'll be arranging for her to shoot a friend's USP 9c when schedules can agree for all of us. If I see a P30 in 9, I might just jump on it so we can be one of those lame couples that dress alike and shoot the same guns, etc.

To be honest, and cynical, I wouldn't buy a fiancee a gun until she became the wife.

yep, as a woman i can tell you he's a bit rough around the edges but ultimately he gives good info and says she can pick out her own gun.

i would also add that there are a lot of youtube videos for women on how to rack a slide. we don't rely on upper body strength....and in some instances not even on hand strength. youtube is your friend!
