Default Remington 582 Barrel install problem - help

I am trying to install a new (new to me but a used but very nice barrel) OEM barrel into my Remington 582. Everything assembles fine but I cannot lock the bolt closed. It hesitates to lock down. I can get the bolt to meet the chamber and click into place. That is as far as it goes.

I realise that the barrel is probably too close to the bolt face causing the jam. Is there a way to give it more room without jeopardising head space? The barrel installs into the receiver with 2 pins at the base. The barrel is already pre- drilled from the factory for the grooves and the pins are just standard. The holes in the receiver are the same.

Any insight would be great. I am trying to restore this old rifle and would hate to just part it out after dumping all this money into it.

Thank you.

On pinned rimfire barrels the barrel is installed against the bolt and then the holes for the pins are drilled in the barrel. Using the pin holes on the used barrel seldom works. Good news is that you can drill new pin holes in the barrel and reciever after installing it against the bolt with the bolt closed.

That makes sense you say that as there is a hole in the base of the receiver that is probably used as a set screw to pin the barrel for drilling. Just wish they included the screw. I will have to try and alter the drill holes. My biggest concern is having very large pin holes that will allow the barrel to more in the receiver. Would that not screw up my headspace? I also just have to be careful not to screw up my receiver. Thanks for the advice. Will work on it again today.

I did not measure it. I can get the bolt to the muzzle and just "click" it to start to close. From there, it won't budge any further without forcing it.
