Default Ruger M77 Gunsite?

I've heard some pretty great things about the "Scout Configuration" and the reviews on this M77 have been pretty good. I'm looking to use this up 800 yds at the absolute max.
-Is it possible for a scout configuration work for this range?
-If yes, what kind of optics do you suggest?

Lastly, do I need to be concerned about the short barrel length DRASTICALLY hindering stability and muzzle velocity? I know its never going to perform like a 26" BBL, but what type of performance could I really expect?

Fwiw, one of the guys at Pala told me he uses his to hit out past 800. I don't know if that's reliably or if he just gets hits.

I've got one coming!! There are reports of slight velocity loss with the 16.5" barrel, But it is not designed as a bench rest match rifle either. Take that into consideration. Good reports of Sub-1moa ammo/shooter dependant.

I'd guess your effective range with a 16.5" barrel would be about 400 yards, unless you're just talking about hitting a target. Actual effective range would depend on the load and bullet weight, but most loads should still have you going 1,000fps at 400 yards.

18" barrel with .308 can go past 800. Long eye relief optic options: you have one from Leatherwood Hi-lux and another from Leupold. The rifle can also take standard scopes; it ships with a pair of 1" rings. Depending on the size of the scope, you will likely need to take the forward rail off for clearance. No big deal.

No one can tell you which scope to get as it is based on what you can afford. General rule of thumb, get the best one you can afford. Even if it's a $300 unit, it's still better than no scope at all for long range shooting. Can't hit what you can't see.

Once you get that rifle, work the bolt while you watch tv or something to smooth it up. Doesn't hurt to polish up the bolt race too. Ruger didn't spend much time on the details at the factory. Right out of the box, it is far from smooth.

Fmunk, you've got one. After everything was smoothed out, is this rifle capable of, as the colonel put it, "first round hits" at 600 yds? I'm not looking to thread the needle, just looking to make a critical hit while I'm far enough away to make myself scarce.

I sold mine. Never had a chance to shoot beyond 200. As for first round hits, that depends on your optic and your ability to operate it and the rifle. A good shooter can get first round hits with a 90 dollar Mosin. You shouldn't use a general quote to measure a rifle. A gun can't hit a target all on its own.
