Default Why magwells?

Besides fashion, does it serve a purpose?

I mean the mag feeds into the same size hole...right?

But you don't have to have perfect aim. You can more quickly slam in a new mag and the magwell will guide it in.

Most competition shooters use them if allowed, IDPA and USPSA. Nothing worse than missing a reload on the clock and have your mag go flying. It can also protect the bottom of your strong hand if you miss the mag well.

Literally just try it out yourself and see if it makes a difference, even on two different guns.

Yeah think I need to.

Looks pretty cool, but I didnt see a reason to make a Glock pretty if it didnt serve a helpful purpose.

Mag wells work better on single stack mags because they are flat and narrower and the mag has a larger opening to feed into. On double stack the mag is more "pointy" and the well is already larger (twice as large as a single stack) so they will feed more naturally.
On 1911 frames you can add a mag well that isn't much larger in diameter than the grip frame. On double stack frames the mag well is usually very large.

i have the jp enterprise magwell for my 17. i think looks great! it also provides a more consistent grip, other than that i just got it just to have it. looks tacticool with a +2 extension also, the jp enterprise magwell is the nicest looking one out there, if you have held or seen one in person, you'd probably buy one. if not you'd probably say it ugly/useless.

edit : think of it as a palm grip like they have for AR's

Yup.

Just installed a Wilson Custom Magwell that goes under the grips on a 1911 and it's nice! Much easier to seat mags since it funnels right in, and it's quicker too.

Don't forget the mag base pads!

I saw one on a G17 in person and IMO it was absolutely hideous. That was just one of a number of extra things this guy had on his competition gun, however - it reminded me of a riced-out Civic with a 3-foot wing, etc.

That said, I am a function over form kinda guy (I prefer to have both, but when I can't, function always wins) and whatever works for you gets my vote, 100%.

I guess it's like a fighter jet refueling in the air?
I think I'm going to get one and try it out. If its not for me, pretty sure I can change it back?

And I have to change the mag base plates too?

Uh, like do you shoot competition? If you did, it's not about cosmetics, it's about function. A better grip and a faster reload. I have magwells on my carry guns. The G17 on the bottom of the pic. You may want to change the mag base, otherwise it's kinda hard to show up in there.

Nice guns!
No I don't shoot in comps, but interested in it one day. I only shoot twice a month and know that's not enough practice to hang with the big dogs.

here's my "fashionable" G34 sporting a Zev magwell.

according to product specs the "Brass Magwell with large insert weighs 7.9 oz". this should help with follow up shots.

Using S&A checkered magwells on the Colt M-1911 and SA TRP Operator for faster reloads.

While I don't feel a need for them with my Glocks and other double stack mags, all my full size 1911s wear them.

Kinda feel the same. I can definitely see the usefulness for competition though on the Glocks.

I ran my XD for about 5 years in stock trim. After getting into competitions, I started to upgrade it. After competing for a while, I added the magwell. It seems to balance out the gun a little, at least visually if nothing else. It really helps to give my hand a consistent place to grip. I love the feel of the magwell vs. stock grip. This is the largest magwell that Pistol Gear makes.

Not a big fan of magwells. But on some guns it looks sick!!! and some guns look like space guns.

Never seen a magwell that made a pistol look nicer. However, they DO serve a prupose. A purpose most likely irrelevant unless you compete

Thanks.

It has a bunch of modifications and it now fits my hand like a glove. I thought about having the grip reduced a little and a stippling job, but it is nice as is and some stippling jobs are better than others. The magwell is just held in with a cam type anchor inside the bottom of the grip and can be removed and not leave any evidence that it ever had a magwell. It is surprisingly sturdy too.

Do some research prior to buying/installing, are stock mags compatable or are you required to purchase new base pads. What firearm will you be installing it on? My Speed Shooters on my M&P 9L required me to purchase their mag bases, $25.00 and $29.00 each. Granted each base added 2-4 rounds but at 6 mags quite pricey. Stock mags would not work with the funnel so I was stuck. I believe Arrendondo's are different. On 1911 frames you just push the mag in with a finger and not the palm of your hand or you can make or buy (5 pack for $8-10) rubber pads and glue or screw them on. You should have them on your mags anyway to cushion when they drop free.
