27 years ago, my wife bought me a Series 80 Colt .45 for a wedding present. I gave her the full safety brief, we went to the range and on her first shot the empty case hit her in the forehead. She put the gun on "safe" pointed the muzzle downrange, laid it on the bench and said "I don't ever want to shoot again". I've never been able to change her mind.
A few minutes ago, we were talking about the latest gun control developments. And she said: Her: "I think its time we bought a gun just for me" Me: "what kind of gun?" Her: "A handgun - big enough for me to be able to protect myself". Me: "You mean like my Glock?" (I have a 23) Her: "No! That's yours. I want one for me" I almost feel like I need a cigarette right now... ![]()

Make sure you don't get one that ejects like that. I know my Steyr M would eject casings to my head. Be glad she didn't get a hot casing in the back or the boobies, then she would never ever want to shoot again.
I got a .40 S&W hot casing burn under my eye because my shooting glasses caught it and I didn't want to shoot for 6 months.

My wife, on our first and only range outing said "OK, that didn't suck, I could see doing this again, but not very soon, because it kind of hurts".
We have not been to the range since. And swear to God, this is the exact thing she said after she gave birth to our twins. |

I loved the day my wife told me she wanted to start shooting with me. I have never gone to the range to get away from her, so it was fantastic when she decided she wanted to go with me. ![]()

I took my fiance to Barstow before Xmas to shoot for the first time. Started her with a .22 rifle, then .22 pistol, then 9mm pistol, then SKS, then Mosin, she was scared of the mossy 500 shotgun but did fire it a few times. On the way back, she was so happy and excited that she told me that for my bday she will get me a gun and that she wants a pistol only for her on her bday. We share gun ideas, law on guns and she gets just as heated as I do about the damn gun control b.s. Also, my older sister that went shooting with us, wants to start collecting guns and wants a .22 rifle then a 9mm pistol. hahaha They showed up knowing nothing about guns, to knowing pretty much everything that is needed to know about safety, using the guns, reloading, cleaning, assembly and disassembly...

Last week my mother-in-law (who once told me guns the most dangerous thing to have around children) not only thank me for teaching her daughter and grand kids how to safely handle guns but also ask me if I would help her select one for herself. She also wants me to teach her how to safely use it.

After I got my first 1911, my wife wanted her own so she could join me in my new hobby. She recently picked up a Sig 226 EE for X-mas and Beretta Type M for her birthday. She shoots a S&W 686 and M1A regulary, and has learned to not wear V-neck shirts due to hot brass. Only took one time for that to sink in.

guys, if she wants a gun, let her pick it out herself.
there is no way you can do this for her. many men have tried and several guns later they wish they'd taken her to the gun store instead. take her to a range and rent a lot of guns. she's already shot yours but have her shoot them again. handling pistols in a gun shop is great but i found that shooting them was a different thing entirely. and don't be afraid to do some reading/searching in the Ladies Forum: many men have done so and been happy they did.....more importantly, the woman in their life was happy they did.

My SO was anti-gun when we first met. 6 months ago she let me take her to the range to understand handgun safety so that she would be more comfortable around them in our home. After teaching her the basic, she decided to look into owning her own 9 mm pistol. Took her to several stores to look at different manufacturers and give her the pros and cons of each design. Kudos to San Rafael Bullseye store for demoing the different stock for her. After going to the range and burrowing my IMI Jericho 9mm, my SO claimed my Jericho as her own. Grinning ear to ear that I have a SO that went from anti gun to being a gun owner.

You guys are lucky. It's like I'm married to Obama right now with her left wing views. She vows our son now 5yrs old will never go shooting with me. Although he has a proper cheek weld on his Disney Star Wars scoped laser rifle in close quarters style stance, tactically clearing room to room.

i say a nice 4-inch 686 is pretty easy to handle and can take 38special and 357mag.
my wife is in love with hers. if its got to be semi-auto, you can do a glock 19 or some kind of striker fired pistol thats easy to operate. |

My wife and daughter shot for the first time Christmas eve and since then she keeps getting pissed cause I go to look at guns at lunchtime with my buddies. Well, today we went to lunch and afterwards to Sac Black Rifle and handled some pistols (Glock, SA XD, etc) she liked the S&W M&P 9 and said "Let's get it now, while they have it in stock". I had to check myself. So she took the test and bought it. My daughter turns 18 in April and told me I have to take her to get her HSC on her b-day so I can buy a pistol and transfer it to her. Totally cool. |

thats great news. I have been playing mind games with my wife recently... When I go to the bathroom I would hand her my gun and she would be like what am I supposed to do with this? now she grabs it without a word and I've caught her holding it and aiming in at the wall (slide is pulled back, chamber is empty) just a wee bit more and I know shes going to want to shoot it haha

My fiance has a .22 rifle. She shot my 9mm 2 days ago and doesn't like how big it is, or the kick. I'll try to find her something that she can handle but still packs enough punch to protect her..

I think you guys have forgotten the first rule of teaching the wife (or anybody!) to shoot---the 22 rifle! A good 22 rifle, like say say 10-22, is the BEST way to get anybody started shooting. I can't believe the OP started his wife out with a 45---easy way to create people who will NEVER enjoy the shooting sports...

My wife grew up around guns and spent 3 years in the Army (where we met). She humped an M60 and had to qualify with Ma Duece (we were MP's). Our carry gun was a Berreta 92 and she really liked it but she hasnt really shown an interest in guns for many many years.
Recently she wanted to go shoot and really fell in love with my 1911. So much so she said it is now hers and I needed to get a new one for myself. DROSed one today and put a hold on another. Shes a keeper!

If I bring my Ruger 22/45 and the Remmie with powder puff .45 colt loads, she might have a better time than she did with the 9mm, since the "ouch, recoil!" seemed to be the thing that had her second guessing that it was fun or not. I'll have to wait until the panic range sessions die down though, if it's one thing that gets her aggravated, it's waiting around and a long line up at the indoor range is sure to make her like the experience less. |

Thats always good news and a wonderful thing to have your significant other say to you. I took my other half out to the range for the first time and she shot my AR-15 and my glock 17 and she loved it. It was her first time ever shooting as well. On our way home from the range she tells me that she wants her own AR so now we are in the middle of building one for her but her only request is, is that she gets to pay for half of it because its hers ( good for me) and that nothing pink touches or is put onto her gun which is fine by me. What is even more exciting, as of last month she wants a handgun for herself now as well that she can call her own. I must say im a happy camper. Since then, she has gotten her two uncles and one aunt into shooting so now we all go to the range together every so often.

Hmm. You guys with the wives/girlfriends having a change of heart about and warming up to firearms are lucky. My wife is even MORE against firearms in the wake of the mass shootings last year in Aurora, CO, the Sikh temple in Wisconsin, etc. and last month in Newtown, Conn.
She's fine with me and my friends and our guns, because she knows we've gone through extensive training. I think she's more worried about someone seemingly "normal" who has guns and going through a rough patch in life, and then going postal. |

my 69 year old Mom (Dem, but not overly liberal) has recently talked about wanting a handgun.
I recently built an AR for my girlfriend - I had a dust cover engraved with her nic-name on outside and Durty Gurl on inside... she LOVES it and gave me the biggest hug she's ever given me... She also made me smile when I showed her a .308 cartridge from a batch of Fed Gold Medal Match I got a while back - her response was "it's beautiful" ![]() ![]() Anyway - chicks are into guns more and more these days...

I purchased a Ruger SP101 357 mag revolver 12 days ago (thank you Irish185) as a surprise for my wife as I wanted her to have a pistol to get comfortable with (if she hated it I knew someone that wouldn't mind shooting it). She doesn't mind shooting but it's not tops on her list of things to do. During the 10 day wait and before I told her about the Ruger she actually came to me and said she wanted to start practicing shooting with me. Wants to go this weekend after the gathering in Sac. I think with everything going on she is seeing the importance of being able to protect herself and the kids.
Total shocker when I gave her the Ruger yesterday. She was very excited to say the least. Threw in some pink ear and eye protection. Girl loves her pink. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 |
