Default Tweekers and rocks

So I know this is a random question and I asked some of my partners and they didn't know the answer either. Why is it that every tweeker has in their possession random rocks, crystals, quartz or some variation thereof? It seems to me that every meth user I encounter has a rock in their pocket or in their car or in their home. Am I the only one who finds this strange? Ive asked users and have received no valid answer.

Reminds me of a time my buddies and I were out riding dirtbikes and some tweakers pulled up in a car and was asking where they could hunt for crystals. I was like how the hell should I know. So there is definitely a connection. lol

I've got rocks in my yard. But, as far as I know, I've never even seen meth.

On a serious note, the few tweekers and ex tweekers I've known don't fit into that category but, I could see most tweekers focusing on something a simple as a rock for long periods of time.

Question

We had a local meth monster who would patrol the curbs with a flashlight looking for diamonds. He was asked, that was his answer.

I don't know if he found one once and decided that there must be a kimberlite pipe nearby or if he was just nuts.

Strange side effect.

Since you seem to come into contact with them fairly frequently, why not just ask a few and see what they say? I personally have no idea.. but it does seem like a coincidence that crystal meth users would be carrying around.. crystals. Gunna go out on a limb and say it has something to do with that?

Ok I'll bite. Best answer I ever got was "these are diamonds that formed on the glass of the space shuttle during reentry". Keep in mind they were simply broken glass and rocks.

My former neighbor was LE and told me that tweakers always like to carry "shiny things" and take apart computers, VCRs, etc.

Not really helpful to answer your question I guess, but just an observation he told me. I think you shouldn't try to assign rational thought to something that drug addicts do.

Just to let you know - my brother-in-law is a meth addict, and over the years I have experienced all of the "classic" effects of meth use first hand with him. I remember the first time I noticed that something had changed with him (later learning that was about the time he first tired and became addicted to crystal). This is a drug that destroys your mind and makes you insane.

From wikipedia:

Psychological effects of methamphetamines can include euphoria, anxiety, increased libido, alertness, concentration, increased energy, increased self-esteem, self-confidence, sociability, irritability, aggressiveness, psychosomatic disorders, psychomotor agitation, dermatillomania(compulsive skin picking), hair pulling, delusions of grandiosity, hallucinations, excessive feelings of power and invincibility, repetitive and obsessive behaviors, paranoia, and – with chronic use and/or high doses – amphetamine psychosis.

The symptoms of stimulant psychosis vary slightly between different stimulant drugs, but are shared largely with the symptoms of organic psychosis, including hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder, and, in extreme cases, catatonia.

What I have always seemed to find in tweaker cars is tools, fuses, lots of Four Loko cans, and big bags of clothes in trash bags. We did a warrant on a dope house and some chick was sleeping in in a sleeping bag on the carpet right next to a big block Chevy engine.. WTF?????

Never really noticed rocks. Here, we have the hat trick of meth, porn, and darts(yes, the bar throwing type). Find any 2, you know you have the third somewhere.

Rocks are no different than the 13 usb/wall chargers you find in their backpack with 3 dead phones lying nearby. There's no rhyme to the reason, at least that I've found where I work. I think its more of a trend amongst them that just catches on and they roll with it until the next big thing comes along. I say this because when I started 8 years ago, I consistently found pencil shavings in pockets, backpacks, or at the bottom of a purse... shortly after that it was prono mags/videos - although i did get a reasonable (or so it seemed) explanation for that...

I haven't come across too many rocks, but if its one thing I've learned in this job its to always ASK. I always find a respectful way to ask many questions to feed my curiosity and pass it on to my trainees or fellow coworkers. Oh yeah, dont be afraid to take pictures either - of course ask though.

I've got a collection of interesting pictures I acquired over the years...

I haven't found a run of the mill tweaker with rocks in his pockets only the really crazy ones. Tweakers do seem to have a fondness for carrying around ladies underwear though.

The only "rocks" that I have found in tweakers pockets were chunks of broken spark plug insulators that they use to break car windows.

I just stumbled on this post, but when I was a store detective . One of the tweakers had thought aliens inhabited the rocks he was carrying in a crown royal sack . When the Leo took him in, he told the tweak , the sack could not go with him . The Leo dumped it in the trash, and the tweak flipped out, and said they hard murdered the aliens.

The tweekers were confused by my question. However, they say small flashlights are more common. This is apparently for when they lose any portion and have to go carpet sharking at night to find it.

I remember this topic came up in the last H&S 11550 course I completed. The instructor mentioned that tweakers love to carry shiny things because they love looking at the shiny object when they're high. He said it was like looking through prisms for the tweakers. I really enjoy conversing with tweakers, you never know where the conversation will take you.

I had one tell me that they talked to him and gave him the answers he needed. To find a tweeker all you need is a good nose oh that tweeker smell.

In the area I live there are quite a few meth addicts, and some of which are my friends parents, that being said, one of them went to a rock and mineral club(got into it from an old collector who was sober that she cleaned house for) After that she thought that she could find gems and minerals in the natural environment. Having seen her sober and high I know that when she is high she can't stop moving, and to hide the fact that she is tweaking from her children she goes out and looks for rocks, shells, or mushrooms. I believe she thinks of it as "As long as I am doing something nobody will notice that I am high" and the drug itself makes her intrigued with everything and when she sees things on objects and paints what she sees. What I have also noticed is that when her, and all of the others that I know are high, is that they clean. Massive amounts of cleaning supplies(most bought at the dollar store). They ruin their own lives and mostly live what is left of them the same way. My moms friend collected bottles, my friends mom collects bottles, rocks, etc... They turn into pack rats and think something they find in the middle of the woods can be useful so they take them.

EDIT: Last I talked to her she found turqoise in a boulder

I am yet to encounter rocks, but plenty of other weird stuff in tweaker's pockets. random trash, bottle caps etc. Had one guy who likes to carry around a plastic bag full on dead bed bugs.

Are you sure they were mineral in nature? Meth is commonly being made in various colors and even flavors now. I arrested a burglar recently who had purple (grape) and pink (strawberry) meth in a hidden compartment on his leather belt. They are also starting to soften "Jolly Rancher" hard candies and mix meth in with that too. When they re-harden, they still look fairly clear and opaque.

Around here, tweakers usually just have lime cheeto's and Mountain Dew. Kinda weird.

I own pawnshops. Some in bad neiborhoods. Lots of tweekers ask us to test their bag of crystals for diamonds. So I think there is your answer.

Mystery solved.

Searching the musty carpets for the last crack rock that fell from their trembling fingers takes skill. After honing this skill, in some cases for many decades, tweekers can spot a small sparkly object from 100's of feet away. This explains how they find this 'treasure'. But why keep them?

Humans by nature like shiny things, often we keep shiny things on our person.
After smoking their lives away, tweekers are left with very few shiny things.
So, they keep pieces of broken glass or crystals in their pockets. I find it quite encouraging these tweekers still show signs of being human. Im sure you do as well.

Joking aside, thank you L.E.O.s for the extremely hard job you folk do everyday. You are much appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe a dealer sold them the rock and they just couldn't part with it lol....or it might be a last resort to sell to be able to buy some real meth...

Around here, the tweaker trifecta is meth, porn, and fraud. I can probation check any room in my motels and I'm guaranteed to find all three. Disassembled electronics and dead cell phones get honorable mentions, as well.

Funny you mention this...... I was at the river just south of Parker a few years back and this guy we knew brought this tweaker chick. We were hanging out on a sand bar and she was wearing cargo shorts. She disappeared for a while and when she came back, all the pockets on her cargo shorts were packed full of small rocks. packed...LOL. She could barely walk with all the rocks in her shorts.

Sex implements, shiny things & stolen property is what I've seen the tweekers with the most. Nasty drug, nasty disease (addiction).

I thank god for the LEOs and mental health professionals, corrections officers who have to deal with these goons long term.

Lucky for me, I work on a big red fire truck / ambulance. So in some instances, I can medicate them to help quell their delusional tweaks.
