I am in the process of selling a handgun and have been asked if I would ship it to an out of area buyer's FFL. When I priced the cost of shipping, it became obvious that it was impractical since a 5 pound package via Fedex overnight is about $100.
I see in this thread http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=648804 that it is much cheaper for an FFL to ship using the USPS. My question for you FFLs is do you ship for unlicensed individuals and, if so, what is typical fee for this service; do you charge a flat fee plus USPS rate? Is this going to be a cost effective way of shipping a handgun? Thanks,

Anyone can ship a gun to a FFL using FedEx and the cost is around $60 for next day delivery. A FFF01 can ship by USPS for $15 . That is the only rescan I would get a LGS to ship.

There's no law about shipping times. It's been said that UPS and FedEx require faster ship times for revenue purposes. USPS doesn't care about ship time. But USPS can only ship a handgun for an FFL (and certain government or other exceptions). Using an FFL might be less espensive for you if they use USPS. Just for reference, a recent handgun shipment through USPS cost $27 because they wanted registered mail in addition to ground shipping fees. The shipping cost would have been around $12 just for ground. Insurance is included with registered mail. I don't believe the registered mail is a requirement. Not even sure if adult signature is required. But of course it's a good idea.

Where are you located? I often ship handguns for people USPS, but I am in the LA area.
Depending in the fee that the FFL charges, it can often be cheaper to have a FFL ship a handgun. There is no point to having a FFL ship a long gun. A signature is required (other question).
