It is almost 100 years old, but in great shape. anything I should know, or check before I attempt to shoot it? also wondering what kind of ammo I should use

It's a .22

Tried it yesterday, kind of a POS, maybe it just needs a gunsmith to look it over. Put about 6 rounds thru it before I decided to stop. The cylinder didn't seem to index correctly after firing, then got stuck, and wouldn't rotate.
