Default How many propane tanks do you have?

Relatively cheap, near unlimited shelf life, and portable. How many tanks do you store for emergency food prep/heat?

I have 4 x 20lb now, 2 in use, 2 to swap out. Thinking about getting 2 more for emergency fuel to heat water, etc.

I have a 280 gal in the yard, but usually don't have $600 to fill it. Not portable, though.

I have 4 x 20 lb., 1 x 40 lb. and 1 non-DOT tank that holds 14 gallons. They are all either full or in rotation to fill. I don't do tank exchange, as the exchange tanks are usually short filled (15 lbs instead of 20). I have mine filled at my propane supplier.

I also have about a dozen disposable tanks for my camp stove as well as a bulk tank adaptor hose. I watch for the disposables to go on sale and pick up a couple when they do.

One in use, two spares: one spare for the BBQ, one spare for SHTF. Here SHTF means some kind of local event like a power grid disruption. I'm not prepared for a big earthquake or anything, but I'd have enough gas for a few days of cooking.

2 x 20 lb. One is a Blue Rhino so I can just switch it out at a market on the 4th of July when I run out.

6 total. 4 are stored for emergency purposes, while 2 are used for the grill. All of them are 20lb. I figure its enough for at least one, maybe two weeks of cooking/heating.

2 x 20lb. - One on the gas grill and one in reserve to swap out.

1 x 5lb - For camping trips when lugging a 20#er is to much.

10 x 1lb - In reserve for portable applications.

I have:

4 x 20lb
1 x 10lb
12 x 1lb disposables

Speaking of propane tanks, any of you have the device used to refill the small disposable propane tanks? I usually see them for $20 but not sure if they are worth it.

Also, if you don't know this already, most tanks are stamped with a mfg date. After a certain amount of years (I think it is 12) refill locations will not refill your tank. However you should be able to exchange it for a new one.

Well, that seems a bit extreme. I would think a propane safety card, a background check, and a 5 day waiting period would be sufficient.

You're right, they can't just outright ban tanks... just high capacity ones. Better stock up on rapid flow valves.

Anyone know a good site to get the larger tanks 40-100lbs, something perhaps I need no more than a dolly to transport. This is something I need for the rainy day.

The large capacity tanks are fine if you permanently fill them with enough concrete so they retain their large capacity appearance, but will only hold 5# of propane.

3 total. A 5 gallon (don't know what they are by pounds) and 2 7's in my Trailer. I filled the ones in the trailer in August and they just went empty about 4 days before Christmas. I live in my trailer in Yuma during the week and some weekends if I don't feel like driving back to Escondido. I also keep several of the small ones for Coleman stoves/grills on hand.

6 ea 1 # disposables
5 ea 20 #
1 ea 30 #
1 ea 100 #
1 ea 250 gallon for the house

I have our household propane supplier fill the smaller tanks when needed, much cheaper than going to the gas station to fill them.

Yes, it is cheaper that way. Propane for residential heat is not taxable. My supplier knows I use the small tanks for heat when the big tank is empty and does not charge tax on filling them.

1 x 20lb from costco, was 28$ then about 16$ to fill it.
I used that and a adapter i bought for 16$ from harbor freight to fill up smaller 1lb tanks which i have about 6 or 8 of.

THen I got a bunch of those small MSR and other brand backpacking canisters with multiple stoves.

2x20lb in the truck camper and one on the BBQ.

5x20lb, 1x30lb and 1x40lb as spares for TC and BBQ.

Bunch of 1lbs for the camping stove/lantern/grill.

Also have a couple of the butane single burner stoves and a case of fuel canisters.

About 25 of the camping propane canisters, another 10 of the butane/propane mix ones for my backpacking stove. All these are reserved for emergency use (I buy new ones when I go out in the woods), and I estimate would allow me to cook for 2-3 months.

Just out of curiosity, are there inspection issues that arise out of having your tanks buried?

If you use them that means they get rotated out, whats the problem? I have kept one for about a year with no issues.

The tanks themselves are good for 12 years before they have to be inspected.

I have had people check the date before they would refill them.

AFAIK propane stores indefinitely.

4 - 5 gal. tanks 1 on the grill; 1 on an outdoor heater; 2 spares always full
1 - 2.5 gal tank full
about 10 of the "quart" size that you use with most camp stoves or Coleman lanterns

I figure we can cook and boil water on the grill for about 30 days

I also have the transfer adapter to fill disposables but have never used it
