Default What is "the wife" ?

Can someone explain to me why guys refer to their SO as "the wife"?

Why not "Sandy", "Sandy, my wife", "BW", "my wife"?

What is a "THE wife". Do they have the only wife in existence?

I ask because I've never heard a woman say "THE husband".

(for those that don't know, HH is for handsome hubbie, BW is for beautiful wife).

I refer to my bride of 39 years as, well, my bride.

So, I can't answer your question.

My wife and I just celebrated our 39th on 21 June.
OP, It denotes ownership not partnership. My wife, my other half, my best friend and I are partners through this journey together. It is a shared journey of ups and downs, good and bad, success and failure. We get through this as partners.

"The Wife" sounds a lot nicer than "The *****"?

Not sure about this, I don't refer to my wife as "the wife" but whatever.

As far as I am concerned yes, she is the ONLY Wife in existence for me hence the singular reference.
Also why do people refer to their employer as 'the boss' instead of 'my boss'?
Same thing, it's just a manner of speaking.

I think that for a lot of men, "the wife" is approximately equivalent to "the boss," hence the carryover of "the" instead of "my."

i.e., "Let me check with the wife first..."

I usually say "my wife," but I am sure that I have used the reference "the wife". The is used for singular and as term of endearment. Imagine how my wife would react if I said "one of my wives..." atleast if I say "the" it is singular. To me I do not see it as derogatory, the last time I used it went something like this "I have to get going because it is time to eat and the wife is an awesome cook." And that is not a insult saying she is in the kitchen where she belongs. She likes to cook, and I like her cooking and do everything I can to be encouraging. I don't know if anything I just wrote makes any sense, I am not running on much sleep.

I don't take "the wife" as horribly insulting, but it does seem to "second class" her.

But I do find "my bride" absolutely charming.

I don't have an opinion on "the wife" but I have never heard my husband refer to me as that and I know I have never referred to him as "the husband". He has a name and so do I. If he chooses not to use my given name, he can refer to me as The Goddess. LOL

Now my sister and I used to get irritated at our Uncle David because when he would talk to us and talk about our sons, he would refer to them as "the boy" whoever he was talking about. They were all interchangeable as "the boy" and we used to think he just didn't like them(my Uncle is pretty ornery so it wouldn't be unusual) until his only grandson was born and he DOTES upon that little boy and he calls him, yep you guessed it, "the boy". LOL

I don't know if she's OK with me using her name in an online forum, so I don't. I'm also not going to ask, "Is it OK if I use your name when I talk about or refer to you online?" Maybe you all don't care, I don't know. I'd rather not find out afterwards that you do
I try to use "the Mrs." though, if that's any better?

As a non-native English speaker, the term stuck out to me as well because it's a little strange...

Anyway, my inference is that this is just a way for men to refer to their wives. I bet most don't give it much thought really.

I think that it's like if a lot of people refer to something or someone in a certain way, it sticks. I don't assume there is any put-down intended.

Well what about married people who refer to each other as "Mother" or "Father"? "We'll have to see what Mother says". Or all the way back to Gone With the Wind... "We'll have to see what Mrs. O'hara says" in speaking about his wife.

Bugs, you changed your Avatar! I didn't recognize you!

LOL madly. My mother referred to my father as "Daddy", even to his face. I remember blowing up at about 9 years old, saying " He's MY daddy, Mum, not yours!"

And I just remembered my mother flinching when I referred to my boyfriend-du-jour as "my lover". And the 'du-jour' thing was much more belittling than the lover part....

I was engaged once to a man who was a career Army man. And I addressed him as "Major", but only in bed....

Such a hot topic, how we address and refer to our loved ones.

My grandfather would almost always address my grandmother as "woman." Such as "woman phone," "woman door," "woman coffee," "woman the roast," etc. Some might regard that as somewhat improper.

Although he would often use a short version of her first name unless he was referring to her as "woman" or addressing her as "woman."

The term "the wife" shouldn't really bother anyone. Your wife is your life long partner and best friend. If you're in an unhappy marriage or something and referring to her as "the wife" then maybe there is something to it.

There are some oddly-socialized women who object to the 'possessive' aspect of the word 'my'. They are often identifiable by their peculiar spellings of common words in written communications, e.g 'herstory', 'womyn'.

That said, I never refer to my wife as 'the wife'.

the details do not matter until the Governor signs or allows the bill to become law.

Ask CA law questions in the How CA Laws Apply to/Affect Me Forum
- most questions that start 'Is it legal ...' go there.

Not a lawyer, just Some Guy On The Interwebs.

I call my significant other 'the other half'.

Does that count?

Taking a page from Jurassic Park, I will just refer to my Gf as "the next future ex Mrs billofrights." Calling her "Number 4" just doesn't have the same romantic undertones

I'm not married so I refer to my girlfriend as "the chick"

I'm another "bride" guy; never understood "the baby", either

We say it because we hate our wives...obviously.

It beats, "Hey *****!"
