Default long gun gift from out of state dad

friend of mine has a dad in Nevada who has a few long guns that are a bit older and was never registered. He wants to gift them to my friend.

are these to be sent through a Nevada FFL to a FFL here in Ca ??

or can they be just taken from Nevada next time he is there and self registered?

Nevada, California and the feds do not register long guns.

Legally, the dad can ship them himself to a California FFL or he can take them to the California FFL in person. However, many FFLs have a company policy of only accepting firearms shipments from other FFLs. If he asks around the son should be able to find a local California FFL who will accept the shipment directly from the father. The FFL can charge whatever he wants for doing this kind of transfer. The last one I went to charged $65 for the first long gun plus $25 for each additional long gun done on the same DROS, but prices vary a lot between FFLs.

No. Even though long guns do not need to be registered, it is still a federal crime for residents of two different States to transfer firearms without going through an FFL.

Any firearms crossing state lines must be transferred through a CA FFL to be legal. They do not have to be sent from an FFL, unless the local FFL requires it, in which case I would find another FFL.
