Since this is an information sticky, lets just keep real reference material on here so we don't make it hard to find what we are looking for by having to go through non reference material

Since there is so much FUD and confusion about Lead/Leadfree in the Condor Zone, here is a list by species.

Big-Game = Lead Free;
Deer - Bear - Pig - Elk

Non-Game = Lead Free
Ground Squirrels - Coyotes - English sparrow - starling - weasels - skunks - opossum - moles - rodents - Crows - Bobcat - Raccoon - Grey fox

Small-Game = Lead OK
Cotton tails - Jacks - Tree Squirrels

Upland-Game Birds = Lead OK
Dove - Quail - Pheasant - Chukar - Grouse - Ptarmigan - Turkey - Banded Tail Pigeon

Default Fixing the FUD on Magazine Capacity

Magazine Capacity for Rifles, Handguns, and Shotguns

Rifles and Handguns/Pistols: There are NO Limitations set by DFG on Magazine Capacity for Hunting any species. If it is a CA Legal Rifle/Pistol you can hunt with it.

Shotguns for ALL Game Animals (+Crows): Big Game, Small Game, Upland Game Birds, and Waterfowl Hunting are limited to 3 shells (2 in the mag + 1 in the chamber) [Crows are Non-Game, but are also limited to 3 shells]
See F&G code Subdivision 2. Game and Furbearers §311, §353, §485, §507

Shotguns for Non Game Animals (except crows): Limited to 6 shells. See F&G Code Division 3, Chapter 1, Section 2010

Now that wasn't so hard was it?

Just an FYI, in 30 years of monitoring those channels and working on gubmint radios I've heard maybe 2 calls from wardens. They just don't use those radios a lot so don't expect to hear much.

Perhaps the 30 year old gear and techniques are due for a refresher than

While the traffic intensity can be describes as low I keep hearing numerous tickets, warnings given, cdl checks daily, fishing violations on Sacto river, Napa river, Petaluma river, even tactical comms , occasional poacher takedowns and reports etc..., location anouncements etc.
I must be doing something right. Try connecting an antenna...

Maybe it's a Socal and central coast thing, that's where I monitor the most. Trust me, I've asked the wardens why no chatter and they don't want info going out over the air. Cellphones are their friends. Would your want you 20 going out OTA on a raid? Or tactics?

I didn't see it listed explicitly in this thread so be advised that the DFG is now the Dept of Fish and Wildlife. The official URL is now http://www.wildlife.ca.gov.

EDIT: Portions of the website seem to still be using the dfg.ca.gov structure, so many of the links posted above may still be active or, at worst, direct you to the wildlife.ca.gov site.

Old post guys, I'm looking for information on magazine restrictions for shotguns as well any shot size requirements, if any, as it pertains to non game specifically coyote.

Have read through it and my interpretation is there are no such regulations.

Help a brother out please!

The shotgun capacity limit for coyote and other "non-game species" is 6 rounds. The take of "game species" is limited to 3 round capacity shotguns. There is no shot size restriction for non-game species. I have included references, since someone else has said otherwise.

EXCERPT FROM CDFW CALIFORNIA OUTDOORS COLUMN

"Shotgun capacity for coyotes
Question: What is the shotgun magazine capacity while hunting coyotes? (Matt A.)

Answer: Only shotguns capable of holding no more than six rounds may be possessed or used for the take of any mammal or bird (FGC, section 2010). Therefore, the maximum shotgun magazine capacity for hunting nongame species, such as coyote, is six. When hunting game species, the limit is three rounds.

Most awesome, thank you. Looks like I need to retire or plug up the 590. Have carried it for many years. What a wonderful place CalGuns is.

California hunting laws have ZERO requirements/restrictions for rifle round count or handgun or archery () round count. Notice my emphasis. In other words, you can hunt, in California, with as many rounds (arrows/bolts ) in your rifle, handgun or archery setup () as is otherwise legal.
