It's bad, but clearly that pic is easily 3 times life-size.

On another note, is it really that wise, to post pics like this on a website that wants to promote gun ownership?

Better to learn from others mistakes. It's the same as someone on a motorcycle site posting about a crash or on a fishing site about a lure in your hand, etc.

He isn't stitching it up, he is holding a flashlight on the other side so you can see the hole.

Umm, OK.
I know a guy that did this to his hand with a shotgun. After stitching up the torn up areas, the doctor grafted his hand to his abdomen so skin would grow onto it. Then reconstructive surgery was performed several months later.

It may hurt while it's healing, but big injuries like that really don't hurt the way small cuts hurt.

I fell through a plate-glass door 30 years ago. My right arm was cut bad - elbow bone protruding, bicep showing, Tendons on forearm completely exposed & a big chunk of glass in the top & protruding through the bottom (which I slowly pulled out before going to the ER). I was thinking, "Hmmmm, where's the pain? NONE. But, when I got home & the anesthetic started wearing off & the swelling started pulling the stitches.....YEOW!

When I was around 9, I was playing handball with my brother in my driveway barefoot & I started hearing a scraping sound. I looked down & there was a nail in my big toe sideways, out the other side & it also went into the toe next to it, "nailing" the two toes together. Not much pain. I tried to pull it out but it broke off; it was rusted (that's when I learned why that nail was brown instead of grey). The other side also broke off when I pulled on it. I went to the garage & found a fresh nail & pushed the piece out & poured some peroxide in the hole. (First Aid knowledge for a 9 year old). What a foamy mess. I wrapped the toe in masking tape. It healed in a couple of weeks. Not much pain. Tetanus? What's that? Guess I was a lucky kid.
