I doubt you will have to use the excuse. But it is a good one. I like the way you think.

If you think in detail about the trip the bullet makes down the bore then the small gouge or scratch is of little consideration. Jacketed bullets tend to zip right down a poor rifling job so your barrel may be just fine.
Lead bullets must first get past the crimp. Then be squashed in the lead or rifling many times at a angle and then a trip down Ballard rifling your little gouges are nothing compared to deep Ballard rifling on the little lead bullet. Then when it thinks it is going to make it the muzzle gets it. Shoot that gun!
