SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco's only gun store will be allowed to resume its five-decade-old business, over the objections of some neighborhood residents.
Police officials on Wednesday gave conditional approval to renew licenses for High Bridge Arms on Mission Street, which shut down when a permit expired in February.

The approval came after more than an hour of discussion and public testimony at a permit hearing at police headquarters.

Gun store manager Steven Alcairo said the store will be a good neighbor and operate safely.

"Our intent is to operate a lawful business in every way," said Alcairo. "I operate one of the most regulated businesses in the country and in San Francisco."

Most of the 14 people who spoke supported allowing the gun store to resume business.

But some neighborhood activists said the business is inappropriate for a residential neighborhood because of fire hazard and possibility of firearms getting in the hands of criminals.

Jaime Ross of the Northwest Bernal Alliance said she felt the opposition of neighborhood groups like hers helped get the city to add conditions to the permits, for instance regulating the store's required lighting and security measures.
