Buy a used laptop from a shop. Lots of people have to have the fastest/latest/etc.
Backup the drive to a network device on a regular basis.
My three laptops are all over 5 years old, and for web browsing and office type software, they all are much faster than my ability to type.
Typical failures are hard drive, screen, and power connector. I'd skip buying one from a student...
