The lightest overall finished rifle would be something like that, but with a pencil barrel instead of an M4 barrel. To make it even lighter you could use a Plum Crazy carbon fiber lower. But I prefer metal.

The GAU-5 I was issued had an 11.5" barrel, which would be even lighter. But the only way to legally build a clone of that would be to build it as an AR Pistol. Which at one point I did, but I sold it to fund another project.

I really like the old school light weight rifles. They are great for running and gunning. Rails and long hand guards are nice too, but when weight is an issue Old School is the way to go! On hour 8 of a long hard day of training, you really begin to appriciate the lighter rifle.
