Pin with the central groove will be retained by the J-spring that is in the hammer.

Pin with the groove near the tip of the pin will be retained by one of the long legs of the hammer spring as you are placing the hammer into place.

I've only used DPMS lpk's...they contain two identical pins with both having a central groove and the offset groove near the tip of the pin.
