This is absolutely true.

Took both out last wknd, the 03-A3 has a straight sporter stock (no sling) that I chopped and installed a 1" pachmayr magnum recoil pad onto. W/ proper cheek-weld it still loosed my molars.

The Garand, on the other hand, is a pleasure to shoot. Shot Fifty (50) rounds w/ the steel butt and only a cotton shirt. The key is proper shooting positions and the prodigious use of the rifle sling.

Using the web sling

After the initial sight-in of the rifle, I always shoot Garands from field positions w/ the sling.

It makes that 9.5 lb. rifle into a 209.5 lb. rifle.
