In the meantime I'll offer that a Savage in .308 with Nightforce glass should be an excellent platform to learn this discipline. An advantage of the .308 is the ready availability of quality ftactory match ammo.

It seems that everyone who starts this discipline wants "to shoot at 1,000". This must be a "magic number". Regardless, the .308 with the right ammo will have no problem reaching 1,000.

There are a number of schools that offer precision rifle classes and I'd recommend checking them out to start with a good knowledge base. The CAPRC also has its shooter clinics, which would seem like a good way to get started.
