I have a friend who I ride motorcycles with. He was technically "homeless" for a while.
For a period of several years after he got out of the Army, he "lived rough", totally off the grid, and jobless.
He set snares for food. Harvested wild edibles. Set fish traps in streams.
Came into town on occasion to visit the charities for some free canned goods and some replacement clothing.
He went through a period of time where he didn't want to be found by someone he was in the Army with. He got word that the guy had died. He then got himself together, cleaned himself up, and got a good paying job and place to live.
Some people have a good reason for being homeless.
Some, a very few, have the skills to also live off the land as opposed to living of the combination of charity and the refuse of others.
