Then you are very lucky. I've personally been raped (at knifepoint), come heart-stoppingly close to being gang raped (at gunpoint), been cyber-stalked by a group of whackos whose threats against my family were credible enough to interest both the FBI and US Attorney's office, and had the misfortune of being next to a friend of mine when a group of people she'd pissed off decided to jump her.
The fact that the odds of a violent crime happening to you are low (about 1 in 300 per year), the fact is that those statistics are not likely to be much comfort if you're the 1 in 200 it happens to. The latest FBI Uniform Crime Report data cited about 1.2 million violent crimes in the United States last year - and that's near to a historical low.
