This is the question I have posed on my thread about Handguns showing up in AFS on routine traffic stops etc.

It seems that if someone established an NFA trust and put you in it, then went ahead and DROS'd a pistol (or in this case any gun after Jan. 2014) you wouldn't be in the California registry but still a legal owner of a registered pistol in California.
