We had a unique situation at our station (Walnut) while I was in patrol. The CHP officers who covered the fwys and unincorporated roads in our area were from the Santa Fe Springs station. During shift change and heavy traffic, it would usually take them at least an hour to get to the scene of an accident that we were sitting on waiting for them.

Our Capt. and their Capt. finally made an arrangement where the officers assigned to our area were given lockers in our station and allowed to park their PV in our lot. They would hold their briefings outside on good days.

I had an opportunity to meet them and they were all a great bunch of guys. It turns out one of them was the coach of my daughter's softball team. His daughter and my daughter were best friends. Since he and her mother were divorced, I had not yet met him and his daughter lived down the street from us.

We got to talking at the station and realized our connection. We became good friends and it was a tragedy when he was intentionally run down and killed (David Romero) while on his motorcycle stopped at a red light in the Çity of Industry, my old station. The AH who did it was convicted of 2nd degree murder, but that was poor solace for his 3 kids.

CHP: good people.
