SUBJECT: LASD TRANSITION TO SMITH & WESSON M&P PISTOLS

THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS IN THE PROCESS OF A DEPARTMENTWIDE
TRANSITION TO A NEW DUTY WEAPON, THE 9MM SMITH & WESSON M&P
(MILITARY AND POLICE). THE WEAPON WILL BE ISSUED WITH AN ATTACHED
FLASHLIGHT AND A HOLSTER TO ACCOMMODATE THE PISTOL AND LIGHT.
ORIGINALLY, THE DEPARTMENT HAD PLANNED TO BEGIN TRANSITIONING TO THE
S&W IN APRIL 2012, HOWEVER, DELAYS IN THE PROCUREMENT PROCESS HAVE
POSTPONED THE ACQUISITION OF THE EQUIPMENT. IT IS CURRENTLY
ANTICIPATED THAT WE WILL BEGIN RECEIVING PISTOLS, LIGHTS AND
HOLSTERS BY THE END OF THE SUMMER, IN QUANTITIES SUFFICIENT TO TRAIN
BOTH PATROL PERSONNEL AND ACADEMY CLASSES SIMULTANEOUSLY.

FOR PATROL PERSONNEL, TRANSITION TRAINING TO THE S&W M&P WILL REQUIRE
AN 8-HOUR CLASS AT THE PDC RANGE. ACADEMY WEAPONS TRAINING WILL BE
INCORPORATED INTO REGULAR RANGE INSTRUCTION. CONSTRAINTS ON THE
DEPLOYMENT OF THE WEAPONS TO PATROL ARE LIMITED TO ACCESSIBILITY OF
OUR RANGES AND AVAILABILITY OF INSTRUCTORS. ACADEMY CLASSES REQUIRE
SUBSTANTIAL RANGE TRAINING FOR EITHER THE S&W M&P OR THE BERETTA,
RESTRICTING THE NUMBER OF TRANSITION CLASSES FOR PATROL. LEADERSHIP
AND TRAINING DIVISION WILL WORK DILIGENTLY TO MAXIMIZE THE NUMBER OF
TRANSITION CLASSES. ISSUANCE OF THE S&W M&P TO ACADEMY CLASSES WILL
NOT DELAY THE RATE AT WHICH PATROL PERSONNEL RECEIVE THE NEW WEAPON.
EVEN SO, IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT A DEPARTMENTWIDE TRANSITION TO THE
S&W M&P WILL BE 2-3 YEARS.
