I have a Skystream 3.7 and whisper from Southwest windpower. They work great and at the time had very good incentives. You have to be in a good location though. The 3.7 has an integrated inverter so you can wire it directly in to your houseline.
Since I installed it, did the foundation and engineering it really only costed me $8k. Normal installations are around $21k. I have a lot of water pumps, lighting, and machinery on my property so it has been very cost effective. Especially since PG&E raised rates on tiers 3 & 4.
The whisper powers my battery system, and dc aparatuses in my chemlab.
I also have a very old wind turbine from Southwest that came with my sailboat. but it is old, and loud...sounds like a helicopter taking off. So I dont use it, the others are very quiet though.
Solar system have changed immensly and you can beat most wind turbines in production and cost now....and you don't have all the legal hurddles that getting a wind turbine does.
