If you can't pass the basic POST employment exam, you might want to re-think your career goals. The academy is much harder academically. Add in the stress and physical training, and you will be behind the curve. If they don't provide a firearm, you will need your own before you can start the firearms training.
Every department is different in the type of firearm they issue and/or authorize.
Before starting any academy, I recommend that you review some of the basics that you will need to be successful, such as English grammar and composition, and of course, physical conditioning.
