You can use metal guide rods, with factory springs, they won't hurt anything, or help anything either. I run them on my G17L and G34 because the nose cut out is only semi round and it's easier to get the metal one in. And contrary to popular belief I only replace the recoil spring when it gets too weak to close the slide. The G17 on the bottom has over 80,000 miles on it with no new spring.
