Ruger 10/22 vs Colt M4 22 Carbine

Have been looking to purchase a 10/22 but haven't been able to find one in stock. A friend of a friend is selling a Colt M4 22 Carbine for $350. Not sure which route to go. Does anyone have a experience with both and feel like offering any advice?

renardsubtil 02-22-2013 11:35 AM

Keep checking the classifieds for the 10/22 they'll pop up occasionally and highly worth it, these will resell for a little loss later down the line if you decided to sell and there's a myriad of help and modification guides for it on the internet.

Personally I don't like the Colt 22 carbine just because I don't find it even close to the functions of my own AR15 clone. If I wanted a "training" type AR15 in .22lr I would probably go with the Smith and Wesson M&P .22lr carbine. The Smith & Wesson tactical rifles feature a fully functional charging handle, an AR-15 style magazine release, bolt catch and a two-position receiver mounted safety.

tonelar 02-22-2013 11:37 AM

The 10/22 is a better .22 than the Colt M4-22.

$350 isn't that great of a price for a used umarex. But it's still $150 less than new.

jcaliburr 02-22-2013 12:20 PM

Think I'm gonna go ahead and wait for the 10/22. Thanks guys!

Nickgt40 02-22-2013 12:21 PM

Good choice.

10/22... IMO the best 22 ever made. You will never regret owning one.

msand951 02-22-2013 1:20 PM

I just scored a 10/22 at bass pro on Monday. By pure luck , it wasnt displayed I just ask the guy if they had any expected to hear the usual ,"nope sold out dont know when were getting any ", instead he walked toward the 22s checked underneath the display rack and bam there was one with my name on it. They told me if you have and they have one they will write your name on it and put it aside but you have to purchase it that day.

msand951 02-22-2013 1:25 PM

I like the AR and tactical 22 for my kids . There eyes seem to glow with the wow factor. I want to get this for my older 10/22 for them.

I know its legal . and assault features dont apply to rimfire. But do you think its pushing it if I use my legal 25rds. Or should I be ok.

If you don't mind me asking, what version and cost? I was thinking of getting the Takedown for easier storage/transport but Big 5 is asking $380. The Woodstock version is $280 so the price is pulling me in that direction.

calif 15-22 02-22-2013 1:28 PM

The Ruger 10/22 is the gold standard. I have both a Ruger 10/22 AND the M&P 15-22 Performance Model.

The M&P is fun but a bit finiky for ammo. The tight barrel likes CCI Tactical 22LR only. Other CCI and anything else I get failure to eject. The Tatical stuff is flawless though. It does funtion like the AR with bolt hold back and release and the same mag release mechanism.

The Ruger will fire anything and loves everything. No issues at all. Parts are cheap, mags are cheap too.

Good luck . . .

Like others have said 10/22 is a better rifle than the Urmax Colt M4 22. Wait for a 10/22.

Where about's are you?

I just installed this kit and it makes the 10/22 an awesome tactical .22. Here is a pic and video of my son shooting it in Havasu. I purchased the 25 round mag version, had it shipped to my Havasu house, then I disassembled the mag to bring in to CA, and then I blocked it to 10 rounds so I can use it here.

Los Angeles. All resellers in the area are sold out and back ordered.

Very nice set up!

Ricky-Ray 02-22-2013 4:20 PM

If your in LA I would venture over to Turner's. They just had the 10/22 takedown on sale last week or the week before. I was able to score one during the sale.

From what I've been told by one of the managers at Turner's 10/22's come in pretty quick so if you put a deposit down for one I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get one.

Yes, it comes with the fake can, and also a muzzle break, I chose to install the can and the kit is a solid fit all around.

can't wait for next Saturday. get to pick up my ruger 10/22 takedown. picked one up at turners for about $320. scored about 675 rounds at ~$.07/round so hopefully it will be as fun as everyone says especially at that price.

Tekkno 02-23-2013 1:19 AM

If you can buy the M4 .22 for $350 go for it!! 10/22s nowadays are selling for around the same price too (it used to be $230 but not anymore)

Skip the Colt and wait for a 10/22. I thought about going the tacti-cool route but decided to make a tack driver. It was a money pit and I caught a lot of grief from the ex wife over it. But it shoots dimes at 50 yards with good ammo.

SB1964 02-23-2013 10:34 AM

I'd buy a 10/22 IMO. Make a benchgun or a lightweight model. I'd rather buy a used 10/22 that's nice, than most tactical style 22's.

Jyruiz 02-23-2013 10:42 AM

You can also go with this stock.

Definitely gonna wait for the 10/22. I'll try Turner's ASAP.

Sweeeeeeeeeet.

adarak 02-25-2013 9:11 PM

As I understand it, a featureless AR .223 with a bullet button can use a 30 round magazine.

I'm a bit confused about rifles such as the Ruger 10/22 / S&W / Mossberg 715T which is rimfire, but does not have a bullet button, yet is legal to use a 25 round magazine?

Sweeeeeeeeeet.

Started life as a standard 10/22 carbine. VQ hammer, mag release and bolt release. PC bolt guide and springs. Whistle pig 16.5" barrel and a Fajen stock. With a Simmons 3-9 scope.

Rimfire is excluded from the AWB, so if you legally owned the magazine before 1/1/2000 then you can use them all day.

So yes you can use them, but you can't buy new rimfire hi-caps in Cali.

Chameleon Loco 02-26-2013 1:18 AM

My mp15-22 eats almost all .22 other than the cheap Remington and Winchester, it shoots the Remington match no problem. It keeps me happy while I wait for ar-15 prices to come down. The ruger 10/22 was the first .22lr I shot if the prices ever come back down I might get a takedown model.

Ricky-Ray 02-28-2013 11:12 AM

10/22 Takedown on sale starting tomorrow at Turners $329.98 + tax & DROS

jcaliburr 03-06-2013 7:22 AM

Got a call from Big 5 since I put my name on a list. They're asking $389.99 for the Takedown and they will have it on Thursday. Would like to wait for a better deal but don't know if I'm patient enough.

dpop24 03-06-2013 10:04 AM

I have both rifles and love them both but use them for different kinds of fun. The Colt/Umarex is for blasting lots of rounds and getting the AR15 feel for cheap. I've put thousands of trouble free rounds through it and my wife loved it so much she claimed it for her own. The 10/22 is for accuracy and plinking (although mine is all upgraded with Kidd parts).

If I was you and could afford both, I'd get the Colt from your friend now and the 10/22 later when you can find one.

I bought one today at Big5 for that price. A little pricey but I didn't want to wait.

ty_w_massey 03-06-2013 5:32 PM

I got a used 10/22 for 100$ and put the archangel 5.56 kit on it. Looks and shoots like a SR-22. Looked up serial #. it was manufactured in 1971. Still smooth as ever.
My first gun, wouldn't sell it for anything.

najay 03-06-2013 7:42 PM

they have some 10/22 rifles at ELITE FIREARMS ANNEX in orange. My wife picked up a red laminate stock one a couple of weeks ago. Very nice rifle. We also picked up a mp15-22 from turners last month, and that is also a very fun rifle to go plinking with.
My friend just picked up a Urmax Colt M4 22 and he cannot find mags for it anywhere. I was able to get 4 promag mags, and 2 sw mags, for the 15-22 without much trouble.

One of my 10/22's is that model w/ synthetic stock and I want to mount a bipod on it. Which bipod is it and did you drill the hole yourself for the sling/bipod mount?

This is actually illegal. A featureless AR WITHOUT a bullet button can use legal 30rd magazines; a fixed magazine able to accept more than 10 rounds is considered an evil feature.

I let my impatience take over and I decided to buy after seeing it at Big 5 yesterday. And now the 10 day wait begins. Now if I could only find some ammo....

jcaliburr 03-08-2013 7:56 AM

Can someone recommend a type of ammo? Looking for a well rounded round that is good for target practice & self defense.
