bye bye BLM access

the State and BLM will be gifting hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of acres of our public lands to the windscam turbines and utility scale solar projects. McCain Valley in San Diego County was just given away to Wall St. http://www.drecp.org/maps/

gesundheit 02-11-2013 8:10 PM

These guys are destroying America.

rmatt 02-11-2013 8:31 PM

soon i wont be able to ride motorcycles out there anymore.... damn it.

Hunt 02-11-2013 8:56 PM

we all need to get involved and make public comment, some of this can be stopped, it's bad, really bad, hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of acres of our public lands will be given away.

paratroop 02-11-2013 8:59 PM

oh yeah. where I usually go, they have been steadily building a windfarm. Now they are planning solar too. We drive right underneath where the power lines are being put. it's just a matter of time until they cut off our acsess all together

jonc 02-11-2013 9:01 PM

it is the end of the world

desertjosh 02-11-2013 9:09 PM

Ugh. Even though i ride a CR500, i still liked going there. Next it will be Gordons, then the rest of Glamis

ExtremeX 02-11-2013 9:09 PM

Old news… I shoot and ride out in San Diego BLM and the wind turbine construction is already happening…

I wish I had pictures for you but they already built a few miles of wind turbines right on top of my regular shooting spot.

Every time I am in the area I see more and more, and they aren’t even close to being done…

ExtremeX 02-11-2013 9:12 PM

More info here at the El Centro BLM website.

http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcentro.html

It really is upsetting… ruins the landscape, and the local residents are very upset about it. You see a lot of “wind farm workers not welcome” signs…

sdfire 02-11-2013 9:14 PM

Whaaaaaaaaat!? There already is barely any blm left in SD county. Need to find out how to fight this

SB1964 02-11-2013 9:17 PM

sdfire, That older guy in the Truck today seemed to indicate something would change, I hope not. Either way, keep me on the list, let me know how I can help. Thanks for having me out there!

The sites I care about we have already lost... and its already too late and the Right-of-way Grant is already issued... The "fight" if you want to call it that... happened months ago..

http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcen...ress_wind.html
Proposed Location: 5 miles west of the town of Ocotillo, in western Imperial County
Acreage: Approximately 12,436 acres of BLM-administered land
Status: Notice of Availability of the Record of Decision published in the Federal Register 5/11/12

http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcen...isec_west.html
Acreage: 1,130 acres private land
Status: Approved on August 23, 2011

There are a couple more projects on the approval list but I have no doubt they will pass.

sdfire 02-12-2013 9:28 AM

It seems like they post the meeting times for public comment in obscure places, then have the meeting when nobody can make it. I try to keep a look out for these things, but there is too much going on behind the scenes to keep up with.

MG34 02-12-2013 9:29 AM

When I first started going out McCains you could shoot, camp, ride a dirt bike, do just about anywhere you wanted to. For 10 years we Never saw a BLM Ranger. Back then the area was completly open to do what every you wanted to do. Now when I go out there I just shake my head and think of all the old days and all the good times we had out there. RIP McCains

penguinofsleep 02-12-2013 10:02 AM

solar and wind energy actually have the potential to work really well at current levels of technology, but it can also work really well w/o using up THAT much land.

pretty sure someone somewhere got a little extra something for all of this...

Please take a moment and email the Governor's senior advisor on renewable energy, Michael Picker. Mr Picker is really on our side he was a major player in creating SMUD (local PV rooftop generation district for Sacto). Unfortunately the big fossil fuel players (Carlysle, Goldman Sachs, Shell) are now manipulating the renewable energy game on our public lands, creating a "too big to fail" plan. BLM has offered up MILLIONS of acres for study, this is bad, really bad, we stand to loose a very significant portion of huntable BLM lands here in Southern CA. Access will be severely restricted.

RE: Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan

I am a sportsman and a recreational vehicle user, my family and I hike, camp and hunt on our public lands. I am strongly opposed to allowing any more utility scale renewable energy projects and transmission lines on our public lands. The public, to whom the land belongs, not Wall St bankers, lose recreational opportunity, intact ecosystems become permanently fragmented, Indian cultural resources are destroyed. Community owned power districts as in Marin County and local distributed generation as done in Germany, Spain and Australia is a viable option for California instead of saddling the tax and rate payers with an irreversible "too big to fail" energy sprawl on our public lands. Additionally, Investing in this ill conceived plan seriously undermines the implementation of distributed generation and community owned power districts.
Respectfully,

Uh, no they don't. If anything requires massive subsidies in order for it to be 'profitable', then it doesn't work. The 'profit' is just the subsidy.

CDFingers 02-13-2013 12:21 PM

It appears that the Bureau of Land Management is, er, managing the land. Go figure.

My guess is the power generated will go to power the southern part of our Golden State.

Hunt 02-13-2013 1:22 PM

the point is they are building a "too big to fail" hoax that will undermine an an honest distributed generation market. The CPUC is mandated to protect these ill conceived investments, and it is the usual players Goldman Sachs and cohorts. Who pays we do for inflated rates, taxes on unneccessary infrastrucure, they get a guaranteed profit even if not used.

Well, at least you won't be tearing up and damaging the land anymore!

(Pure sarcasm...I've been an off road rider for over 40 years. I can't count how many riding areas were closed to "protect them" and then became large tract home projects a few years later.)
