Just got back from BIG5...

So I just got back from BIG5 and I was surprised to note no .22LR rifles on display and then I found this sign...

I was surprised about the prices (well maybe not). I'm just glad I got one way back. Now the ammo is a different story.

Did anyone pay similar prices for their rifle(s)?

jarhead714 01-19-2013 7:59 PM

Just came back from the one in Tustin. The only sign I saw was a recall for the Chiappa 22 cal. M1 carbine. They had no 223 or 308, or 22. Crazy prices on those tacticools. Can you imagine paying that much for something that goes "pew, pew, pew?"

Hide&Konceal 01-19-2013 8:06 PM

Yeah my thoughts exactly. This was a BIG5 in San Diego.

Gabriel80 01-19-2013 9:08 PM

What a rip! Get a 10/22 and put a kit on it.

paranoid56 01-19-2013 9:17 PM

wait to they are on sale. i got the HK417 for 499 (i think) the other week. i wouldnt pay 700 bucks for it though lol
these are standard Big5 prices even before the dec thing. they go on sale for an ok price then back up to to high

I just looked at the new Big 5 weekly ad, and though I browsed it quite quickly, I don't recall seeing any firearms in there.

I was at a Big 5 in San Digeo North County and manager hinted to me that they were getting a shipment in in two days and that if I wanted anything I should line up before the store opened at 10:00. He also said they would limit ammo purchases to 5 boxes of any one type and brand. I figures why not? I got to the store the morning of the delivery about 9:45 and there were already about 10 people in line waiting. I walked out with the last 5 boxes of .223 and one 100 box of 22lr hollow points. It was worth the 15 minutes wait to get in and 5 minute wait at the counter. The line at the counter went pretty quick. People there knew exactly what they wanted.

My dad went to Modesto big 5 for .223, they said its sold out but there is a waiting list. He is at the bottom of page 3...

seabee1 01-20-2013 4:48 AM

incredible

sd_shooter 01-20-2013 5:19 AM

Big5 pushes itself as the family sporting goods store: tents, sleeping bags, baseball bats, shoes, etc. If they were serious about EBRs they would make much more $$ but I'm sure it would reduce sales on the rest of their goods. Imagine a line like we see @ Turners!

They should get into something innocent looking like the Saiga. Offer it for sale every month @ $300, they would sell truckloads. I'd get one for every member of the family.

In Capitola, the flyer is missing it's usual array of arms. The city council there and anti-gun activists have their eyeballs on them right now. Link

ummmmmm456 01-20-2013 7:00 AM

the sig 522 on sale and that 10% off coupon could go as low as 420 if you time it right. prices right now are higher than usual.

Tracer666 01-20-2013 7:28 AM

The MP5 is 70 dollars more than they wanted in Early December. Also all shops including mine, are removing a lot of weapons from display due to the shortage of weapons and ammo and the possibility of extremists/robbers trying to steal what they can. Its all precautions though. Also another reason is most weapons that my shop has for display, we dont have any in stock as well as the distributors are completely out. We dont want to display something and not be able to get it for you guys...

wc12 01-20-2013 8:19 AM

So now what's the reason to visit Big 5 if they are not displaying the only few things they sell worth buying on sale?

44fred 01-20-2013 8:33 AM

Has anybody thought why the tactical rifles are not in public view? Ashamed of what they are selling! Dealers that are not "all in" are part of the problem not a solution. I choose to shop at dealers that promote the cause, not run from it.
Big companies have a tendency to act this way.

X231 01-20-2013 8:35 AM

I just checked the online Big 5 ad and all I saw was pellet rifles. Big 5 always sux though so this is nothing new.

Meety Peety 01-20-2013 8:49 AM

Yea a couple weeks ago a manager told me that they would no longer sell any black rifles in "high caliber" (In other words nothing above .22lr) and he said they would still sell the .22s but keep them in the back out of plain view. Said it was a corporate decision after Sandy Hook.. and when he told me this it was less than a week after the shooting took place.

He said they would continue to sell the ammo though, and like the rest of you guys, the shelves are always empty. They tell you to come stand in line at like 10am but I'm at work when it goes on and by 4pm when I get home it's already gone.

brassburnz 01-21-2013 5:55 PM

$749 for the HK 416 and Colt M4 .22 Tactical- wow!

GM4spd 01-21-2013 6:37 PM

$749 for the HK416 can't be too bad,one just sold on GB for over a grand!

Stripeknight 01-21-2013 7:47 PM

Why buy one of those over a Ruger 10/22?? :D

Heck for that kind of money (Speaking of the HK 416) you could almost build a nice AR if you carefully look for deals:oji::oji::oji:

The Chiappa recall has been posted for sometime in the Carson City store. Also nobody mentioned that yesterdays Big 5 ad only had pellet guns in it I think.

i bought my colt/umarex cabine for $369 on sale from big 5,these are not standard prices, these are inflated prices.

The last three newspaper ads have shown no firearms on sale. At least in the Northern California ads.

Dang! I just picked one up a few weeks ago from the forums here that was unused for $600. It didn't seem like a good price at the time but it is starting to sound like it was!

I am pretty sure the Big 5 ad in the paper last week had some rimfire and a bolt action 223 in it... I'm not 100% on that though.

In any case, I'm fairly certain that I won't be buying anything else until this panic is past!
