Painting My AR SOme Advice please...

Hey guys so I already have an all black AR-15 and for my next build I want to change it up a bit and go with Flat Dark Earth look. Here is what I wnat it to look like:

http://palmettostatearmory.com/media...e_detail-r.jpg

Basically the only parts that I want to paint is the stripped lower, stripped upper and the rails. The Buffer tube, barrel, LPK and the charging handle will stay black.

What I want to know is what is the best paint I can use and do I need to primer the parts first or just paint everything? Also my lower will have a Magpul FDE Stock and grip. So I really want to match the paint to those but it can be off a bit. So if anyone here has any experience in painting please let me know what are the best products I can use out their?

Duracoat or cerakote...I'm going with Duracoat on mine...it's basically airbrushing.. http://www.lauerweaponry.com/...like $90 for the kit plus paint...

EDIT: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY ON THIS POS!! See my post below... ;)

Cheap and easy to apply... if you mess up or need a touch-up in the future, just spray over it :o)

Duracoat is one of the easier DIY options for a tough finish that is extremely chemical resistant. Cerakote is another option, but is a bit more complcated due to the need for baking the finish.

If you already have a compressor, you can get a Harbor Freight airbrush for about $9.00 that will work well enough for most duracoat applications. Pick up a quart of laquer thinner as well for cleanup. Like most paints, the basis for a good duracoat application is all in the prep work.

For duracoat they sell a spray bottle that you can pour the duracoat and thinner into and spray. Home Depot also sells them for $10 or so

You will want the air cure version instead of the bake cure version as the plastic stock would most likely not survive 300-350 degrees

You can also look into alumnahyde II from Brownells

You tube has a lot of videos of proper prep and application techniques

The problem with rattle can spray paint is gun cleaners. Gun scrubber, brake clean and many bore solutions will melt krylon and other spray paints

To not spend the extra $30 for Alumnahide II and a good TCE degreaser on a $1,000 + gun seems silly to me

Run a search on the forum and you will find dozens of detailed threads on the process

Here is the asrosol kit
http://m.homedepot.com/p/Preval-9-oz...267/202533738/

It is a glass jar and a can of compressed gas
It will work with duracoat. I have not heard of anyone using it with ceracoat.

The Preval Airless Paint Sprayer is a professional spray system that is interchangeable for flexible use in a variety of applications. This spray gun is able to atomize almost any liquid and offers a professional finish.

Sweet thanks guys. Ill be going with duracoat and that spray bottle. I just need to understand on how to mix the paint. Would a 4oz bottle be enofe to paint a stripped lower, upper and 12" rails?

If you really want everything to match just paint the magpul parts too.

Should take about 2 ounces or less to do those parts. I painted this entire rifle with about 3 ounces:

cerakote-much more durable and won't rub or wipe off -even with solvents.

doesn't scratch very easy either.

MOA Armory in Azusa did several for me

Just wanted to post an update on this thread....So i got a Pasche airbrush from DSA, and some fde duracoat from LaurerWeaponry.com....What a waste of $80....the can of air that came with the airbrush kept freezing and wouldnt shoot....So, I went to Home Depot and got the Preval sprayer, as posted above....AWSOME! Put my fde duracoat in there from the airbrush and, my god what a difference. Did my upper, lower, rail, 2 mags, afg, gripod, all with a 4oz bottle of duracoat. Got a good 2-3 coats on everything, now just letting it dry. I will post pics later. The shake n spray kit is the same thing as the preval sprayer, but the preval sprayer cost $5!! and replacement cans of air are only $4! Pics to come after cure time.
