Case colored marlin
Tues I am picking up a early 1920,s marlin 39m 22 levergun. .What causes old rifles to loose there case coloring ? This one has 100% of the finsh intact and dont want to damage the case colered resever.Rubing down with oil shouldnt hurt?

Handling it.

Handling, exposure to sunlight (I've been told), and rust.
What I hear from the collectors, de-grease with non chlorinated brake cleaner, and immediately soak all the metal with a silicon based gun oil like CLP.
Marlin used a different color case formula than Winchester and Colt, and JMHO, the Marlin color case was the best looking of the three.
