What 22 rifle would you choose?

If you had to pick 1 rifle for SHTF what would you pick?

I like that the Marlin 795 is cheap and its light.

The Marlin XT-22 is a little heavier but feels pretty good. Would a bolt action be better for SHTF since less maintenace/parts?

badreligion 11-20-2012 9:04 PM

Ruger 10/22 there are millions of them across this great nation so getting parts if something broke is possible. Tons of aftermarket parts means you can have it your way. If SHTF there are 50 round mags out there too.

Ikazamay 11-20-2012 10:10 PM

I have both the 795 and XT-22, I've found magazines difficult to find and I've heard there isn't any reliable high capacity magazines compared to the 10/22. The 795 is pretty light, if the shtf situation where you'd have to bug out on foot I think its a good option, xt would be to heavy I think.

vortec_cruiser 11-20-2012 10:25 PM

It's hard to beat a Ruger 10-22 for price, reliability, and parts availability.

Chaos47 11-20-2012 10:32 PM

I love my 795's and want an XT-22.
Either will serve you well.
I wouldn't really worry about parts wearing out. Each of my 795's have like 5k shots thru them. Get a backup recoil spring, not because it will wear out but that you may bugger it up putting it back in! I've never done it but there are lots of people that have...

The 10 round silver magazines will fit in both the 795's and the XT-22... So get both!

Mr. Beretta 11-20-2012 10:45 PM

Ruger 10 22.

Same. Good luck trying to get replacement parts for those Marlins, CZ's and Savages.

POLICESTATE 11-20-2012 11:10 PM

10/22

Rider1k 11-20-2012 11:20 PM

10/22 no question

onegtalon 11-20-2012 11:25 PM

I only have two 22lr rifles at the moment and as much as I love my 10/22 takedown I shoot the 22AR better...

So I go with my AR-22 made up of a Tactical Machine 556 lower, a bunch of parts and a CMMG upper...love it.

Love my 10/22 takedown! Can't believe it took Ruger so long to come up with it.

It wouldn't be a .22. It'd be along the lines of a 5.45, 5.56, or 7.62. Then I'd stash an AR-7 in my pack to get small game.

Eldraque 11-21-2012 1:03 AM

12 gauge shotgun.

M1A close second

jyo 11-21-2012 1:43 AM

There is quite a good case for the 22lr as a primary survival rifle---especially when it comes to carrying a lot of rounds with you and/or, you happen to already own a good stash of pre-ban Butler Creek 25rd mags that work perfectly. It's the magazine system that males the 10-22 superior.

Rockit 11-21-2012 2:18 AM

Ar-7
Defense and a great way to feed yourself.
Heck...my great grandfather and grandfather used to hunt deer with .22 shorts!

There will always be that one guy. The topic is 22......I choose a model 62

CSACANNONEER 11-21-2012 7:07 AM

I just like gallery guns so, a Winchester '06 is my GTG. It's light, breaks down with one thumb screw, exceptionally reliable and doesn't have the feeding problems a semi auto has. BTW, I do own 3 10-22s, "a few" other .22lr rilfes and even a .22lr shotgun. So, I have experience with a few different .22lrs.

adrenaline 11-21-2012 7:19 AM

I choose my Sig 522 for three reasons.

1. .22lr round (round carry count is a plus)
2. It looks very much like its big brother Sig 556 so if SHTF it has the intimidation thing going.
3. It is what I have. :)

10/22

tba02 11-21-2012 8:48 AM

Glenfield / Marlin 60

Quinc 11-21-2012 9:04 AM

10/22. I once went 12 years between cleanings and have never had any issues, plus it is accurate right out of the box. You can get a light synthetic Hogue stock, Tacticle solutions barrel to make it extremely lightweight. And Don't forget to microslick your bolt so you don't have to ever worry about oiling it.

xrMike 11-21-2012 9:39 AM

10/22 takedown stainless would be my choice.

A JP 22 is tough to beat. Great combo of accuracy, reliability, durability.

TAS 11-21-2012 9:45 AM

A 10/22 or maybe a Savage 24 that jut happens to have a .410 or 20 gauge backup.

If I was picking it for the SHTF then why would I care if it's cheap?

Ruger 10/22 stainless take down since it can be carried discreetly and it's a quality rifle that will perform and hold up.

aalvidrez 11-21-2012 11:30 AM

XT-22 is hard to beat (Magazines on CTD or Exile Machine) but so is a 10/22 for parts availability. I also have a CMMG .22 dedicated upper which shoots great. That simplifies the "one rifle" concept.

cudakidd 11-21-2012 12:00 PM

My Marlin Papoose or one of my 4 10/22s...

TheChief 11-21-2012 12:03 PM

The 10-22 Takedown looks nice. You could break it down and put it in your pack without raising suspicions at checkpoints or when heading into town and wanting to keep a low profile.

Me too. I'd take my Rossi 62.

Takedown, super simple operation, few parts, tube feed (no lost mags), shoots shorts, longs, long rifles, CB caps, etc. and can do it with them mix-n-matched.

Calibres are nice when you're trying to be low profile but still need some rabbit stew and don't want to hand feed the rounds one at a time.

clbshooter 11-21-2012 4:20 PM

Buying a 10-22 takedown this friday from Turners, first 10-22 I have had.

stitch_paradox 11-21-2012 6:25 PM

Ruger 10/22, takedown would be a plus

elx144 11-21-2012 6:32 PM

If your semi-auto jams a lot, you got a bolt action right? When it's working well you can get a follow up shot quicker without taking your eye off the sights.

The Marlin 795 is a good price just upgrade the irons. When I get another one I think I'll get the Numrich rear sight from an older model and maybe a scope. My problem is I'm always loading a bunch of guns in my truck and tend to drop the 795. With the iron sights it still shoots dead on where my scoped and reddot rifles need to be re-zero'd.

Horton Fenty 11-21-2012 6:50 PM

Remington Model 12 Pump.

bsg 11-21-2012 7:37 PM

Ruger 10/22.

the 10/22 Takedown is looking good to me, and sometime after the new year begins i intend on picking one up.

cannon 11-21-2012 8:10 PM

I love Ruger 10/22's but for SHTF I'd go with a Marlin tube fed. No magazine to lose or break. They are also very balanced and east to carry distance.
