Friend Looking for a Double Barrel
I have a friend who is interested in buying a double barrel side by side shotgun. I am not to knowledgeable on these types of shotguns but I thought I may ask. Here is what he is looking for in his shotgun.

Classic Look
Around 28" barrel length
12 Gauge
$300 price range.

Are there any manufacturers that make new low cost double barrels? If not could you recommend the next price range?

Thanks guys!

I don't know much about side by sides at all but I plan on getting a Stoeger-Coach gun since they're popular in C.A.S. They have the "Uplander" in 26" & 28" barrels. Retail price no more than $700.

Hes not wanting to do any action shooting. He wants one for the coolness of it.

He needs to bring more money.

Check gunbroker, etc.

With or without exposed hammers? There are some coach gun knock offs around that price. CZ makes a decent one but not for $300. For hammerless you may find a used Savage/Stevens, they come around here sometimes. IIRC, Baikal makes a pretty rugged gun for a low price.
Start checking pawn shops...

There was recently an Ithaca "Lefever Nitro Special" 12 guage on the "Firearms for Sale" classifieds here. If it's still there, it is a better gun than any of the bottom-end imports. If it's gone, tell him to look around for a Stevens 311, also a better gun than the Russian, Brazilian and Chinese doubles. Plain, but reliable. It had a single trigger, which was an extra cost item back then, but disqualifies it for Cowboy Action competition, if he's thinking of that.

The Turkish-made CZs have a good reputation and are prettier, but more money.

BTW, if you ever buy a "Nitro Special," DON'T pay Lefever prices for it or let a seller BS you that it is a Lefever. Ithaca bought the Lefever company, and stopped making their excellent and very expensive-to-make doubles. Then it attached the Lefever name to a line of newly designed "Nitro Special" doubles and hammerless singles called "Lefever Long Range" especially designed to be cheap and also to hold up to the "new" smokeless powder. They are strong, plain good guns, but NOT Lefevers.

I have a Stoeger Uplander 26" 20ga in great condition that I want to get rid of. I am saving up for a Citori, so every dollar helps. Would he want a 20 gauge?

At this price range, he's looking at any of the Turkish imports--Stoeger, Escort, Hatsan. I thought I saw a Stoeger side-by-side in the latest Turner's winter catalog for about $400?

Look at the Baikals too. He can probably find a used one for under $400.
