Scope suggestions for Mini 14?
I'm putting a Mini 14 ranch rifle in jail tomorrow. In the coming weeks I'd like to find a decent scope that's in my budget ($200 max) good for target shooting at 100 yards.

I've never had a rifle with a scope before so I'm looking for suggestions or things to look for when choosing one.

Thanks in advance

Depends on what you really want to hit. You can pick up decent 3x9s like a redfield for under $200 or if looking for a low power scope the weaver V # for about 150. Also look at nikon or burris.

Maybe a nice Scout model.

On a Mini-14 I wouldnt put anything more on it than a Redfield 2-7x or something similar. They are not the most accurate rifles, so you are looking in the right price range @ sub $200.
There is a million threads on cheap scopes. I'll sum it up for you. There are 2 types of cheap scopes.
1] is a cheap POS from a company that ONLY makes Cheap Crap.
2] is a lower end scope from a company that also makes nicer higher end stuff as well

Redfield (made by Leupold) or a lower end Leupold like a VX-1
Lower end Bushnell, Nikon, Weaver, Vortex, are all good companies that have scopes in your budget. You dont need a lot of magnification to shoot 100yds. Some guys are just Magnification junkies though. Maybe look into a fixed power scope like a fixed 3x or 4x

I'm looking for a scope for my mini 14 and I've pretty much settled on the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x40 from Midway USA for $299. It's a 1" tube so you can use the factory high scope rings from Ruger. Plus it has a mil dot reticle and .1 mil turrets. I've heard that Mini 14s are rough on scopes so I would not go too cheap.

This is best bang for your buck they track true, good glass and are FFP a big advantage for ranging targets at any magnification

These are cost a bit more but are great

Also have u thought about a red dot?
100 yards is close might want to think about this

The Redfield is a good choice. I put Weaver straight 4X on my Mini14 and 30 and they are fine. I got a good deal on the scopes when I bought the rifles and Redfield was not back in business under the Leupold company at the time. You would be fine with a straight 4X or if you like a 2X7 or even a 3X9.

I don't like scopes on a mini 14. You have to use the special Ruger rings and you can't get the bolt out with the scope on.

I like top notch optics so with your budget my advice is either a Weaver V3 if you can find one or Weaver V10. The V3 is a 1-3x20 (see photo) and the V10 is a 2-10x38. V10 reviews

I have a 3x9 on mine and it works great. Us I'm thinking of putting a forward rail on it and a scout type scope on it. Just for fun

I forgot to mention that Minis are notoriously hard on scopes. There is a reverse impulse like an airgun that is murder on cheap scopes and tends to rattle the reticle loose on even good scopes.

Did anyone mention a Burris Fullfield 3-9 yet.The bullet drop reticle worked pretty well on mine. They are made I believe in the Philipines and backed 100% by Burris.
Lately I have grown fond of the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9 with BDC reticle.I think Midway had them for about $179 plus shipping.Cabelas may have them on sale, and they have free shipping until Christmas.
I run a higher end Leupold on a Mini I picked up from a friend. It has some custom work done to it.I have experimented loading ammo for it and got it to 3/4" groups at 100 yds.
As others mentioned they are not tackdrivers as a rule.I have had maybe 6-7 pass through my hands over the years.Their reliability is second to none.I will be keeping the one I have now.

When I researched it I saw a lot of Nikon Prostaff's on Mini's so I went with that.
So far so good.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm compiling a list to research and hopefully Santa will drop one in my stocking

Just to mention Leupold currently has a $50 rebate on their "Mark AR" line of scopes. Until Dec 31, 2012.

Millet DMS 1-4, Burris XTR 1-4, Simmons Diamond Pro Slug scope 1.5-5.
Leupold, Weaver. I have had the Millet, Simmons and Leupold 2-7 all on my 2 Mini's.

Redfield Revolution 2-7x32 Optic Planet $140 after rebates.
