NorCal AK Build Party: After action report

On November 5, 2011 the first 'True NorCal AK Build Party' was held in Redding. At 9AM the participants began arriving at the designated location, Arisaka was our host and he graciously made his house and garage available for the event. We had 3 builds for this event, 2 from flats, one from a prebent NDS.

Alex$ came up from Chico with the sandblast cabinet, parkerizing system, tools, special tools, and served as the build supervisor due to his previous build experience.

Arisaka, Rock6.3 and the participants all provided tools which were freely shared as needed.

Participants in the inagural 'True NorCal AK Build Party' were:
SmellofCordite
Arisaka
JB-NorCal
Jeepers
Alex$
Rock6.3
MrVash

Next time we plan to have:
1. More drill presses
2. More bench grinders
3. More wire feed welders
4. More participants

For those who missed out, you will have to make do with a few photographs since we were too busy building and bsing to take many photos

not much to take pics of from my build, i still have a ways to go

but did get the part bothering me the most done, head spacing the barrel thanks again Alex$

i still have a bunch of stuff to do , but no longer afraid to do it ... now i am watching and waiting to pick up a kit or two for the next 'True NorCal AK Build Party' :D ...

thanks again guys for the place to build, make noise, and have a good day with good people ....

SmellOfCordite 11-07-2011 11:18 AM

Mine was fully together last night, then I tore it apart to work on some things. Bolt carrier is hanging on the hammer and my gas block is canted so I am working things out. As promised I will post pics as soon as possible.

An AK that is not working right? Did you try adjusting it with a rock?

SmellOfCordite 11-07-2011 12:20 PM

Not yet just smoothing some things out, don't think the canted gas tube is really an issue, but it would be nice to have it straight.

Alex$ 11-07-2011 2:18 PM

If you continue to have bolt/hammer issues let me know, I can probably help work it out.

As far as the gas block, blame the Romanians, that is how they built it. In order to straighten it, you would need to press it off, turn it "straight" then press it back on.

=)

SmellOfCordite 11-07-2011 2:42 PM

Thanks Alex, I will shoot you a pm if it doesn't work out. I understand this is an issue with Romanian AK's. Do you think moving the gas block would block the hole?

Ye buddy

Alex$ 11-07-2011 5:17 PM

I didn't really notice the gas block being off when aligning the barrel pin, it can't br that far off. It probably wouldn't block the gas hole if you did move it.

If it were me, I wouldn't move it unless it REALLy bugs you or it doesn't cycle properly. I say test fire it and see how it goes.

I may be going to Oroville next weekend.

SmellOfCordite 11-07-2011 6:32 PM

Yeah I am going to test fire before I change anything major. let me know about the range, I might be in town this weekend.

Arisaka 11-08-2011 8:54 AM

Looks nice!!

SmellOfCordite 11-08-2011 12:20 PM

Hey Arisaka that cleaning kit was really nice thank you.

Arisaka 11-08-2011 2:27 PM

For sure man! I'll sell you some more crap if we ever meet again lol. Is that AK ready for a test fire?

SmellOfCordite 11-08-2011 2:52 PM

Yeah its all ready! I was thinking maybe tomorrow possibly...

dotalchemy 11-08-2011 3:21 PM

I am ENTIRELY in for the next one.

I have no tools at all to bring (except for perhaps a Dremel by then) but I shall provide beer and hearty tales from beyond the horizon.

Arisaka 11-09-2011 12:45 PM

^^ Let's schedule it!!

Arisaka 11-10-2011 4:39 PM

Anyone else eyeballing a 74 kit?

Alex$ 11-19-2011 10:34 AM

74, RPK or maybe a PSL

Arisaka 11-21-2011 12:49 PM

Royal Tiger doesn't advertise 74 barrels, but I saw them in their Christmas email flyer.....

fadedsignal 11-21-2011 4:32 PM

I am looking for a 74 or PSL kit as well. This would be my first build, so I am educating myself intensely before pulling the trigger on a kit purchase.

P.W. 11-22-2011 2:11 AM

faded- look @ AK-Builders 74 kits. They have ones with US made barrels already installed which would make it easier for ya.

I was actually looking at those last night. I read some information about US barrels being a PITA to fit right, but if it is already pressed in then I would be good to go. Thanks for the heads up!

mondo707 11-23-2011 9:11 AM

So I can buy a whole kit from AK builders and then you guys would help me build it?!?!

Bullcoop 12-01-2011 8:21 AM

Please, if you do this again leave me a PM.

The only reason I havent bought a "kit"yet is I dont posess any of the tools, I have the skill though! Being a plumber helps when it comes to stuff like this.
Anyway, I'm in Ukiah and would travel anywhere North I could always get a room if its up on I5.
Thank, BC

gunsnammo 12-10-2011 1:56 AM

This is something I really want to do, but have no experience with and no tools. If you guys would be willing to help teach me that would be awesome. I am also in Ukiah.

gunzboatz 02-05-2012 7:54 PM

Im glad to hear that there's a nor-cal build party starting to work. We should definitely get more organized with it.

Aaron707 02-11-2012 11:40 PM

Let me know next time there is a NorCal build party! I wouldn't mind making the trip over to Redding to hang out and build some AK's. I have the AK-Builder jigs and tools and such. And could bring whatever is still needed like a welder or press.

Here is what I worked on today, put the last coat of wipe-on poly on the furniture, bent flats for an ak74 and ak47 and then riveted on the trigger guard's and started fitting the front trunnions:

Arisaka 02-23-2012 7:29 AM

nice work! we should have another party soon.

4130taco 03-12-2012 7:14 PM

I am down to host if possible at my work in redding. We could use my mill, drill press, lathe, tig, press and whatever else we will need. Email me at
4130taco@gmail.com if there is interest. I would like to build a ak but i have no experiance with them.

Propane 09-02-2012 1:56 PM

Hey guys, I am in Redding too and looking to take on my first build. Let's set a date and start a list of those who can attend. I look forward to meeting everyone.

Seaweed02 09-03-2012 10:17 PM

Me too

I also would like to attend and learn a thing or two. I don't have a build but have one I need to blue. Please let me know when and where.

fryer1979 09-13-2012 4:40 AM

I don't have cash to put together my own rifle just yet, but I would like to attend if another Nor-Cal build party goes down. I do have a good selection of tools including a good wire feed/mig welder, grinders, and the experience to run them. For me it would be great just to meet more members, and expand my personal firearms education.

EmptyMags 09-18-2012 8:50 AM

I would also like to attend the next build party. I have plans for a sweet AMD-65 in 'sporting' configuration, but not all the tools or experience.

Veggii 09-18-2012 8:25 PM

Ya lets do it ! I wanna build me a AK but need some skills , hit me up with details ! when where , if anyone knows were I can buy a good kit or one built that I could break down and rebuild PM me I got some funds too get one yeaaa :chris:

marcopolo650 09-22-2012 9:55 AM

DrArroganto 12-11-2012 12:23 PM

Footb82 12-11-2012 4:04 PM

Also interested, with a +1, so two more for a 2013 build party.

jonzy 12-26-2012 7:56 PM
