Spam Block Test

I've installed a modification that is suppose to drastically cut back on spammer registration. I figure a weekend is a good time to test it since that's when they hit us hardest.

Please let me know if you see any errors, problems or lack of normal functionality.
Usually modifications are well tested before I install them but this one I wanted to get up and running quickly.

I don't recall Mr K saying the twitch was the sovereign solution.

Probably won't be able to notice any improvement before tomorrow; anyone registered before around 3:30 today is still in more-permissive-land.

Reecek 11-04-2017 6:09 PM

Please work!

No offense intended - twas' my lame attempt at injecting some Black Humor into the situation.

Kestryll,

Do you still want us to flag and report the spam messages or just let the blocker run?

Someday 11-04-2017 9:32 PM

Thanks Kes, it's been getting ridiculous lately!

Definitely report spam, this new modification isn't foolproof and some will get through but it should help.

Each time a registration is blocked I get an email, since I activated this modification I've received 5300 notifications of blocked registration. Granted there were multiple attempts in there but it's still nuts.

ZirconJohn 11-05-2017 12:19 AM

Good job Kestryll

WalterTheDogC@t 11-05-2017 12:27 AM

Just fired off two reports...

SonofWWIIDI 11-05-2017 12:36 AM

I'm in!

Thanks Kes!

That's how many attempts. This modification come in to play before any of our standard stuff like blocked email domains and such does.

We've been blocking a crapload of @.ru registrations for some time now so those are being counted too.

It's the price of popularity!

Your fone\puter must burn some power with all the notifications

KES, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU??

Any decision is better than no decision. This is now officially ridiculous.

VictorFranko 11-05-2017 8:13 AM

Did you see Kes' thread that he tried a spam blocker last night? Didn't work very well.

Garv 11-05-2017 8:50 AM

Ask to talk to his boss, that always corrects the problem.

Might I suggest some e-mail tracking software in combination with a NEW registration process.
Notify NEW users that ALL new members MUST accept a cookie that can be activated by Cal Guns management that would lock the senders computer, kina like a a ransom ware.
Then when spammers do their deed you activate the file to lock their computer.
You can disable or delete the covert files after either a time or number of posts.
The code should be relatively easy to write.

therealnickb 11-05-2017 9:51 AM

There may be a reduction in registrations, but there sure doesn't seem to be any reduction in spam threads.

Red-Osier77 11-05-2017 9:52 AM

It seems you may have pissed them off Kest.

Totally...seems like we kicked a sleeping dog. Iíve never seen it this bad.

We have to do something though... keep up the good fight Moderators

Kestryll 11-05-2017 10:19 AM

Working on it.

Apparently the new spam blocker sent so many emails last night that gmail has blocked my account from receiving emails from the forum.

I have not seen a report post notice since 10:00 last night.

Time to try something new.

Holy crap! Considering the ratio of SPAM that got posted to this, I'd say something is better than nothing.

Well good luck!

Librarian 11-05-2017 12:10 PM

Actually, this morning isn't bad at all.

Just whacked 9 spam accounts, 12 threads. Yesterday, first pass was about 50/100.

Is there a provision in the spam blocker to send a compilation report instead of an email for every block? That would provide a list and reduce the number of alert emails.

WartHog 11-05-2017 9:46 PM

So far this evening, there's been very little Spam postings. Probably way too early to declare victory yet...

Fizz 11-06-2017 1:59 AM

All the Spammers follow the same MO. Multiple links in their first post. There has to be an add-on that auto-bans the user and trashes the post if # links > x if post count less than y.

Also, you should see if there are any trends with the IPs used to register. If they frequently come from outside the US, you can make a rule in apache that not allow the registration form to be displayed to those of blacklisted networks.

The captcha on the registration form should also have a way to force an image validation instead of allowing a click only "I'm not a robot" check.
