Best chow hall you ate at?

Where was the best chow hall, on a military installation, that you ate at?

Mine was during my mess tour, on the ship the Dixon, I was assigned to the officers dining room. Man I ate like a king, and when we had over night watch duty, a room to myself, and free run of the kitchen.

But, the best duty I heard, was working the Chiefs chow hall.

You have to admit, Navy chow rocks, three squares plus mid-rats.

Not Mil. but Facility C Dining 1. Those of you who know, know!

USN CHIEF 09-15-2008 10:40 AM

I loved eating on the Chief's mess on the JCS, but to be honest. The best chow that I have had to this date on a military installation has been on Lackland AFB in San Antonio.

NIB 09-15-2008 12:17 PM

Best chow I've had was at the MI dining facility on Ft. Bragg. When the word really got out the line would stretch around the block and at one point they had to restrict it to soldiers in the surrounding barracks only.

Generally the best chow on any Army post will be the hospital chow hall.

The 163rd INF was running FOB McHenry in Al Haweja from 04-05. They had some local hook-up for beef steaks. Every friday night they'd BBQ outside the TOC. It was better than their DFAC and the ones at FOB Warrior and FOB Speicher.

45DAVID1 09-15-2008 1:18 PM

The best was at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar at the (CAOC) Combined Air Operations Center. We had some (TCN's) third country nationals from the Philipines would would get down. Most USAF installation dining halls are contracted out now.

Same way at every major FOB in Iraq and Kuwait. Most are Phillipino. The smaller FOBs have joe's working the chow lines.

The best one I ever ate at was always off base.

With regards to meals....

Midrats
Lumpia & Pork Adobo day
Sliders
Ham and Cheese omelettes with Tabasco

Chanute AFB (tech school), in the mid-late 80s. My Chow Hall won "Best in the USAF". We had tablecloths and shrimp or steaks for dinner, killer breakfasts (i..e seafood omelettes), etc.

After I left Chanute and went to my first real duty station, I asked for my breakfast steak medium rare and they looked at me like I was nuts, as they plopped Sh*t on a shingle on my tray and told me to step aside.

I think that my chow hall at Chanute was an experiment to see how privatized Chow Halls would run, so the contractor pulled out all the stops and probably lost a lot of money. Most of the other chow halls were all staffed my military personnel.

Best food was always at the hospitals, best I ate was at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Vectrexer 09-15-2008 6:25 PM

Mare Island was pretty good when it was around.

stphnman20 09-15-2008 6:26 PM

Warriors Breakfast right after the Crucible! Oh man that was some good ish!

jc_stecker 09-15-2008 6:43 PM

apbrian112 09-15-2008 6:58 PM

best 1 meal: FOB paliwoda balad, iraq Thanksgiving 2003

best on average: peterson AFB... that's right, we used to drive from carson to peterson just to get some grub! they even had people who take your trays for you once you finished eating...

Cardinal Sin 09-15-2008 7:07 PM

Castle Air Force Base in Merced, CA, before they closed it down. Damn near crapped myself when the guy asked, "How would you like your eggs sir?"

I dont think it was the best, but it was sure damn good, I didnt know so much food could fit in our stomachs!!!

MCRD chow hall was pretty good, not recruit chow hall.

bobfried 09-15-2008 8:21 PM

The best will always be the AF catered chow halls.

Best one I ever ate at was around the side entrance of Ramstein AFB where most of the Chief's go. Me and my friends were usually the only non-AF guys there as it was buried so deep in the base no one outside of the AF-peeps stationed there knew it existed.

LAAFS (Space Division) EL Segundo Ca.

mattman 09-15-2008 8:28 PM

I noticed most of the chow halls in Iraq served better food than they ever had state side. However the biscuits and gravy was the best at Fort Knox.

DVLDOC 09-15-2008 8:36 PM

Shepard AFB, Texas.

That was my pick too....MCRD officers mess is the best I've seen. I only spent a week there...but I still remember it.

My worst mess....National Guard, Camp Roberts....field chow came out in the mermite. We each received half a piece of bacon, one hard boiled egg, and half a piece of toast. This went on for months....same crappy 1/4 meals. Good thing we were mech infantry...because after that we stocked the track with canned spegetti-o's, etc. We got a new Battalion commander and he asked everyone what he could change to make things better...everyone said "feed us". Within weeks mess sgts running mess hall got busted stealing all the food and selling it off instead of feeding the troops. Problem fixed...

EOD3 09-15-2008 9:36 PM

Special troops messhall at Redstone Arsenal. Meals to order.

11Z50 09-15-2008 9:55 PM

I always found good chow at Air Force bases. McChord in WA had some good grub. Being an Army grunt, we weren't often allowed in, but when we were waiting on a flight out they would let us eat there.

The Recondo mess hall for 1st Brigade 9th ID was pretty good. Colonel (later General) H. Norman Swarzkoph squared away the cooks and made sure us lowly grunts had good chow, even on the weekends. He made the cooks stay open 24 hours on the weekends because the guys stuck in the barracks were missing out on chow. Swarzkoph was a great commander.

My first unit (2-60 Infantry) had the best SOS. I still cook a batch up for my kids and I from time to time. That's a breakfast that will stick with you!

hitman13 09-16-2008 1:37 AM

Most chowhalls on larger bases in Iraq are the ****. such variety.

Best stateside chow:

Camp Allen, Norforlk VA. Small chowhall for the Marines of 1st FAST. Ran by a bunch of older black ladies from the south.

FRIDAY = SOUL FOOD FRIDAY and them old gals could dish it up good!

Actually most of the middle east chow halls are the ****. Camp Doha has Steak and crab legs every thursday I think it is? And quatar has a bomb *** layout as well.

I love SOS!
I don't make it from scratch, but I do buy it in the frozen section. Have a good recipe to share?

That is true sir! I think the best one I've been to in Iraq is the one in Ramadi.. I dont know why.. I liked it.. Sometimes when we do convoys we would just stop there for lunch. lol....

lcpl. huynh 09-16-2008 11:21 AM

The chow hall at Al Taqaddum is the best I've been to. I thought the one in Habbaniyah, where I'm stations is good, but daaaaang, TQ has its own self serve dessert bar!! I'm so glad i'm not stationed there, I'd be so overweight by now, no matter how much discipline I put in my body.

Moonclip 09-17-2008 1:45 AM

Probably Fort Benjamin Harrison mess hall. Most of the other food I ate was in Greal Lakes RTC boot camp or on Navy ships and it tended to suck.

My shore command did not have a mess, a small base forward deployed overseas, just ate on the economy or from small NEX mostly.

scr83jp 09-17-2008 6:49 AM

The best food on USAF SAC bases was in the messhalls assigned to midnight chow for flight crews & flightline staff working nights. We introduced a lot of friends to midnight chow at MacDill AFB,Brize Norton in the UK & bases in French Morocco .Whenever we were asked where we worked & who the new guys were we'd tell the cooks they were part of the tdy bomb wing that just arrived.

zenmastar 09-18-2008 5:46 AM

Officers dining hall, USS Samuel Gompers AD-37 stands out the best. Other mentions are Naval Annex in Yokohama, and the general mess hall at NTC San Diego. It all depends upon the cooks, who is managing the hall, and the supply officer for the base/ship though. So as personnel rotate duty stations, it can change.

gunsmithcats 09-18-2008 8:05 AM

TQ has a ridiculous chow hall, theres a reason why a lot of guys either going out or coming back from Iraq get all fat happy and dandy in taqaddum.

I mean their shakes, selections, oh my and dont forget the blueberry pancakes.

Best chow hall in Al Anbar though has to be Camp Korean Village. Middle of nowhere, not an air base, and they still get ridiculously good fresh vegetables.
And the dude there makes your sandwiches.

lackland afb definately the best

SDJim 09-18-2008 9:25 AM

At a shore facility it had to be when we were doing a pre-com up at Bremerton, WA. We were some of the first people using the BKS & chowhall at Bangor. Everything to order . . . eggs, pancakes, waffles. If the line was to long they brought it out to you. To this day that is one really nice base.

On ships, any of the closed Chief's Mess before they screwed up the accounting / food ordering procedures.
