A good resource on here for guns has a great piece on sale in the MKT place right now. Colt SAA in 44 sp I think in the Sac Area. Not sure where you are. I know the colts are expensive but that's what i would buy, or go cheap with a Ruger Blackhawk.

^ thanks, I'll take a look.

I feel like such a newb posting a Q like this...

Ripon83 08-29-2012 10:28 AM

I'm not an expert. I have two old SAA's from my grand father and want a new Colt so I've looked. I read a blog post that Colt jacked up the price on the new ones. That created a situation where buyers balked and they went from a 6-18 month wait to readily available then Colt lowered the price again. No facts just a blog post.

I'm going to buy a SAA from these guys at some point:

http://www.usfirearms.com/

Do a search for 'USFA vs Colt' and you should have hours of reading material...

If you want something special and single action, it's between those two and

http://www.freedomarms.com/

unless you go custom.

Colt and USFA for a 'classic' gun; Freedom for a 'modern', powerful one.

I have a Vaquero. Solid gun, but no cachet. If you are constrained by price Rugers are not a bad choice. I'd also look at Uberti.

BTW, I'm not an expert. Just my 2c. Happy googling! :D

I have the Super Blackhawk .44 Mag with a 5.5" barrel; shorter than the "standard" version. It is handy and well-balanced, and I love it. Try to handle one of those and see what you think. I've killed big game with it (open sights); I'll post pics when I get a chance.

My bad the one I referenced is sold

Bummer that was a good deal - I was broke and I really just didn't want a 44sp.....hoping to get a Colt in 357 soon.
