How dirty do you let your media get?
 

I am using Corn Cob media and it is Dirty (grey-ish).

Should I change it?

At what point do you change out your media?

Any "rules of thumb"?

I bought 40lbs of corn cob from Drillspot a while back. Given that I am awash in the stuff, I change it about every few months, my tumbler runs a lot.

When you have to start running your tumbler 8-12 hours / overnight it's time for a fresh batch of media!

if you put too much polish in it things get funky real quick. had to totally de-crap my tumbler and everything. oops! i'll be buying new media soon. cheap white rice works alright as it turns out. gets dirty, throw it out. you get a ton of it at costco for like 10 bucks.....

If I pinch some of it and my hands come away sooty, or the brass itself is leaving my hands unreasonably stained post-tumble; I scrap the cob and get some new stuff in there.

i let my media get as dirty as it wants just as long as my brass comes out cleaner than what it was before it went it. Usually you can tell if you tumble and it takes longer to tumble and the brass to come out clean then you might need to change out the media.

When it takes about twice as long to clean cases as when the media was new is when it's past it's born on date.

If it fails to clean your brass, you should change it. You can prolong the media a little by putting in some cut strips of fabric softener dryer sheets.

I bought a 25lb box of crushed walnut media at Harbor Freight for $14.

I've cleaned over 2,500 cases on the first batch of media with a splooge of NuFinish to polish. 6 hours per cleaning and the last batch took as long as the first with the same results.
