if what you say is true(200 meters)- the results are very good.

Iron sights. A2 "National Match" rear sight with 1/4 MOA clicks and a .038 aperture with a .052" front sight post.

Yes, that was shot at 200 meters (~217 yards). Shooting 2MOA or better groups with iron sights isn't as difficult as you might think. You figure a good AR should hold at least 1MOA. Factor in the shooter with a 1MOA hold, and that's a 2MOA cone of fire. If you're lucky, your gun can shoot 1/2 MOA and with good training and practice, the shooter can bring that hold down to 1/2 MOA or better.

I'm not even a great shooter. You should see some of the seasoned High Power shooters and the kinds of groups they can put on target, and at 'real' distances.

CSACANNONEER 01-21-2009 7:43 PM

Here's a 5 shot 5 9/16" group. Yes, there are 5 shots.

The "X" shot was the flyer that opened it up.

The next group I shot was 5 1/2"

Oh yea, shot at a 1000 yard match with my 50BMG ALS upper. I left the AR50 home that match.

Ironchef 01-21-2009 7:51 PM

A couple weeks ago I got my 22 to fire consistently and while testing about 6 different ammo types and bringing my little scope into zero, I got a few nice 1 MOA and less groups I had always expected of my rifle:

Still tweaking and clamping things down on my ACOG Smith Mount. Sadly I neglected this gun when I bought it mid 90's. Since this shoot I have deep cleaned the barrel with Kroil, and re-tightened the muzzle brake assembly. I suspect something isn't aligned, an M1A NM should shoot better than 6" groups at 100 yards with surplus 147 grain. I'm gonna take it out, remove the brake and see what happens. My big fear is I damaged the crown or something years ago being careless. This scope is AMAZING though.

My Remington 700 LTR in .308 makes one hole consistently with SA milsurp at 100 yards.

Now I run 25X scopes on my long range rifles...heck...even on my hunting rifles I use 2.5-16X scopes. I stay at 4X untill I need to take a long shot and have time...I dial up the mag to see better.

Here is a prime example of having the ability to go to a higher mag. Without it I would never have been able to hit this yote. At 4X all I could see was tree limbs, fence post, etc.
When I went to 16X I was abale to thread the needle through all that and make the shot.
The coyote was 150+ yrds away from my shooting postion in this video.

Take care,Stan

Stan, every time I see that I'm taken back at the accuracy of your Tikka.

Here is a pic of a 5 shot group at 100 yd that my RRA Varmint A4 recorded at the range last year.

And my Ruger 77/17 in .17HMR at 75 yd during a play day at Panoche Hills. A full box of ammo in the 10 ring. My best shooting to date.

And finally here is what my GSG-5 did from 50 yds out.

I try and convey this to people, but most are set in their ways and are not willing to give them a try.

For the low cost of the Tikka...they are sure hard to beat...at any price range...but for $450-600 ($450 for the blued models and up to $600 for SS) and you have to do nothing to them...no bedding,no trigger job or after market trigger,etc....and they will shoot sub 1/2" groups with FACTORY ammo....show me where to match that and I am there.

I am not a fan of one brand or another...I am a fan of out of the box tack drivers though. And out of all the rifles I have owned and/or shot...none have come close....at any price. Ok...my TRG-22 shoots 1/2" groups....still not as good as the Tikka's....but it cost me $2600.00.

I almost bought a Ruger M77 compact in .243 before I bought the Tikka .243...but the Ruger was close to $800.00 And the trigger sucked...so add another $150+ for a new rigger. ANd then there is the question of IF it would shoot as well. I know where I stand when I buy a Tikka.

I am hearing really good things about the Sako A7....it looks very similar to the Tikka with some minor upgrades....not sure it is worth the extra $300+ for those upgrades though.
I am thinking of buying one....will post review in a Tikka vs Sako A7 type post.

Take care,Stan

I can't wait to try my Howa M1500 Ranchland Compact.

And then when you get tired of it as a yote killer...put it in one of these:

I was waiting for one to put my Tikka Tactical in but sold the rifle before Pete started shipping them. Still thinking about doing one in .243.

Between work and crappy weather it's hard to find time. Once again this weekend is taken up, must take a trip to Clovis to visit mom. Priorities first. Shes getting up in her 90's, not much time left. Lost my dad in 2007.

I'm without a doubt putting a Tikka on my list of must haves for 2009.

Yeah I know, I just wish there was more time for play and less time for work. That 40 hour thing is tough sometimes. However in todays screwed up economy I'm just glad my wife and I are still have our jobs. Anyway, as soon as I get my old backside over to the range, I'll let you know how well I can shoot that Howa. Now if I can get my hunting/shooting buddy to stop cycling so much I might get a weekend or two doing some hunting myself. Will be talking to you either here or CPC. Best of luck with the hunt.

Stan have you ever looked at Savage rifles? How do you think they are compared to tikka's? I really need to get a better stock for my 10FLP.

Was sighting in my Savage 10FLP in .308 today at 100 yrds
First shots were low and left then got centered and still needed to get higher, last shot was the highest one.

There was a total of 7 shots.
Used Federal Gold Medal Match .308 win ammo
2nd time shooting this bad boy.

FMJBT 02-01-2009 12:34 AM

Some nice 2 shot clusters in that group. Looks like it would definitely be sub MOA if not for the scope adjustment. Savage 10FP's are some real tackdrivers.

Darklyte27 02-01-2009 7:10 AM

Thanks, the benches we were sitting on were a bit low. We didnt notice till afterwards that they had some higher ones. I was struggling a little to have the rifle positioned right, but over all i think it was pretty sighted in. The rest is just me breathing and getting a snug hold with the stock.

I also had 4 other people shooting my stag 15, most of them were their first time and we had a good time.

The Rifle , and the Target

Here is a three shot group from my AR/M4 w/ Aimpoint @ 50 yrds.....I made almost identical groups at 100 yds , but they werent on a pretty target with a quarter size red bullseye. This was the first day sighting in the new Aimpoint Comp M4. I think that I can tighten them up by half next time. I was shooting at the Metcalf range.

Below is a picture of the rifle used , and the target.

Nice Shootin' Guys!

O.K. Darklyte, You talked me into it.
This is what happened while zeroing my carry handle on my 1st build at 100 yds. Territorial Gunsmith lower, RRA LPK w/single stage with a Bushy M4 patrolman 16" upper. A3 carry handle and A2 front post.
Sitting, resting the pistol grip on a table and holding the forstock. Was hitting high at first. The first target, Fired 3 rounds, Then raised the front site 1/4 turn to drop the POI, fired 3 more, and so on..It's pretty apparent when I jerked and when I squeezed the trigger. The second target was rapid fire. Kinda scattered all over the paper, But I did hit dead center once! :D Looking forward to some optics soon. Not sure if I want to go red dot or scope yet.
