What pair of shoes does your revolver sport?
I just sent in my order for a set of Kim Ahrends' Tung Oil Finished Moradillo Retro Combat Grips for the Model 17-8 that I will be picking up in a week. I couldn't dream putting anything else besides original S&W Combat Stocks on a 6 inch full lug revolver.
From Ahrends Grips' website, these are the cocobolo model, I am hoping for something with a less exotic and darker shade of grain. http://www.ahrendsgripsusa.com/images/new/newitems2.jpg My 627 PC still sports its original grips since I feel the round butt tactical look goes with the unorthodox diagonally cut lug. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...k/IMG_0326.jpg I've got my eye out for a vintage no lug revolver worthy to shell out a money for a set of Keith Brown's Roper grips though.... |
That sweet, factory, black rubber grip.

Thus far, all 4 of these are gorgeous. My daily carry beater excluded, of course.
|
I just put a pair of retro combats on my 5" 625. They are great grips.
My M19 wears Ahrend standard combats as well. Jeff |
I am one of those rare people that like the factory stocks on my revolvers. The most comfortable of all, however, are the original factory "cokes" on my 29 no dash

:drool5: Kurac, I've seen some of your grips and they are just phenomenal. I'd love to get my hands on a set if they didn't sell like hot cakes on the S&W Forum!

Eh, I would just ruin nice grips like those.
I'm a Hogue guy. http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...on62545acp.jpg |

man I thought I was done buying guns but I'm beginning to develop a 'thing' for S&W revolvers.... these pics don't help.
keep it up guys :) |
Pach rubbers for shooting

Hogues or Nills, factory just don't fit. My middle finger knuckle gets really beat up with factory. Too bad because they look great.
|
I like the factory supplied hogue grips and I wouldn't want to put any full power loads through my revolver without them. I do like the look of nice wood. My MkIII is the only gun I own with wood on it, and the cocobolo is very pretty. I like stainless and synthetic materials, as if you couldn't guess from looking at my modest collection of three pistols (rifles and shotgun pretty much follow suit).

GP100 and Speed Six both wear Hogues in Rubber Finger Groove. The GP100 also has the Hogue Goncalo Alves with finger grooves. While the wood is pretty, the Rubber feels better.

Grips are on 610 3 inch http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/u...e/_MG_3060.jpg Keith Brown grips are nice http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/u...e/d9b8f7e3.jpg But if you are going to spend that kind of coin I would get a set made of ivory http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/u...e/0b01deb9.jpg Or original roper grips, just have to keep an eye on eBay and gunbroker. http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/u...e/_MG_3066.jpg |
Everything/anything but rubber -
Altho I must admit shooting a 3" 629, w/ wood grips, is like holding onto a grenade. I especially like these made by Patrick Grasshorn (Executioner) out of Elk antler. With a Tyler T-Grip Adapter, fits my hands perfectly. S&W M624 3" LHS http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...r/P8040001.jpg My one exception to the rubber rule (not the M66) - S&W M649 http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/64966010.jpg |
I went with some Hogue grips from their auction site, cosmetic seconds. Not bad looking and I still have the original grips that the gun was born with.

Factory Colt walnut target stocks on my Pony revolvers...recently acquired another 6-inch Python from a fellow Calgun-er, but still looking for a set of walnut target stock to replace the non-original Pachmayrs that it came with...just can't afford what people are asking for original Python stocks these days - yikes!

I too am a fan of Ahrends. But I go a little further. I sen him my own wood now for grips.
My 386XL Hunter with Retro Combat Round Butts in Buckeye Burl http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...3/DSCN0053.jpg His Cocobolo conversion grips on the same gun. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...3/DSCN0054.jpg Some grips I picked up on ebay from a great guy in Thailand. They are Rosewood and match the rubber Hogue Bantam grips. These are on my 3" 686+. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...3/DSCN0056.jpg And some ebony retro factory style grips from the same guy on my 25-2. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...3/DSCN0057.jpg The only thing I don't have pictured yet are the new grips for the 25-2. Ahrends Retro Combat Square Butt N-frame made from some Black and White Ebony I sent him. They look fantastic. Ryan |
Got these stocks yesterday, Craig Spegel boot grips.
Mod. 57, full house magnaport. Frame has slight overhang. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...ps4297a4c5.jpg Mod. 625-3 http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...ps0317dbf7.jpg |

Kim Ahrend just got back to me and let me know that my order was received last week and I should expect a wait time of 10 weeks!
|
I love Hogue grips on mine.

You can also try looking on ebay. There is a least one seller who resells Ahrends grips for the same prices. And they are genuine Ahrends. Always an option. Ryan |
My double-action S&W revolvers wear Pachmayers universally. I hate the stock S&W stock shape.
One of my Ruger single-actions, a .45 Colt Super Blackhawk, also wears Pachmayers, but that's what it came with. The other, a .357 Old Model Vaquero, still wears its factory grips and I've never seen a reason to change them. |
