█ Mossberg 930 SPX Build & Use Journal █

Besides being new to CalGuns, I am also new to shotguns.
I got a great deal for a PPT on this 930 SPX, with non of the visual markers for the early batch defects.

Besides some Defensive Shotgun classes for myself and my girlfriend, I've been reading up on some of the upgrades needed for HD (and nice things to have).

So far my wish-list is as follows (#1 & #2 being the first on order):

1. Streamlight TLR-1
http://media.midwayusa.com/productim...711/711505.jpg

2. Nordic Clamp and Rail
http://media.midwayusa.com/productim...352/352914.jpg

3. Streamlight Remote Switch
http://media.midwayusa.com/productim...137/137657.jpg

4. Nordic Speed Bolt
http://media.midwayusa.com/productim...761/761448.jpg

5. Mesa Side Sattle (6 shot)
http://media.midwayusa.com/productim...649/649317.jpg

6. ETA Safety
http://elitetacticaladvantage.com/pr...safety_500.png

I like build threads and journals (used to them from my car hobbies) and will use this to organize my thoughts and as a personal reference.

Now just gotta wait out this 10 day jail period!

CasperSYTFU 06-29-2012 4:14 PM

Oh and can't forget a quick shot before they took it to jail.

Congrats! 930SPX is a awesome platform, I love mine! Thanks for sharing. Looks like
Metal Dog Tactical for PPT, great bunch of guys!

CasperSYTFU 07-02-2012 7:44 AM

You got it! Great little shop. All the guys were really friendly and helpful.

Echidin 07-02-2012 3:05 PM

I would recommend ordering the clamp directly from Nordic. I made the mistake of ordering it from Midway only to find out from Nordic that you need to order one specifically made for the Mossberg 590/930 due to its thicker barrel. Also, Nordic will recommend you use the clamp in conjunction with their extension tubes to get the best fit.

CasperSYTFU 07-02-2012 4:00 PM

Good tip!
I'll try to cancel my order through Midway
Cheers!

CasperSYTFU 07-02-2012 7:44 PM

1. Streamlight TLR-1 Ordered TLR-1S
2. Nordic Clamp and Rail Canceled Midway Order, Re-ordered from Nordic, Thanks Echidin
3. Streamlight Remote Switch Ordered
4. Nordic Speed Bolt Ordered
5. Mesa Side Sattle (6 shot)
6. ETA Safety Ordered
7. ETA Follower Ordered

I would wait and run it before spending $$$ on it. There is a reason the former owner dumped it, I'm on my 2nd 930SPX and still have the same issues as early generation 930SPXs and I have the latest generation. While I might have the worst luck with Mossberg...I hate to see another person have the same issues.

These issues cannot be seen by just looking at the shotgun:

1) you will almost max out the windage adjustment to the left, shooting slugs it will shoot high and to the right. While, this might not bother you...it bugs me to have the adjustment almost maxed out to the left.

2) the magazine tube may have abnormal wear (Scoring) from the gas recoil spring...make sure the barrel comes off without any heavy drag..if it does, you will have to adjust your spring. Run it wet, until you feel the shotgun is well broken in.

Google Mossberg 930SPX...there are many forums specific to this shotgun and it's issues that are still present.

I hope you have a good one.

From looking at your picture, you do not have the latest generation SPX. The latest generation SPX has a large knurled bolt handle.

stevie 07-03-2012 12:35 AM

Picked one up a couple months ago. Finally took it out.
25 rounds of Federal #8 birdshot
25 rounds of Federal #4 duck
25 rounds of Winchester 3 inch BB Goose (ouch)
10 rounds of Fiocchi 00
5 rounds of Federal 00

Only one failure to eject with the Winchester.

Turns out the mag follower would hangup on the Choate magazine extension. Which has been sent back to Mossberg for a replacement. Will not do any mods until its running good.

Brownells carries the latest NC clamp for the Mossberg.

CasperSYTFU 07-03-2012 10:18 AM

stevie was yours used?

I see the 3rd gen has a bigger bolt handle, but the ghost ring seems to be second generation.

Hopefully it will be a non-issue, and with the exception of the clamp and bolt, the expensive stuff already purchased is universal.

Only time will tell.

hermosabeach 07-03-2012 10:32 AM

You mention that uou are looking to take classes with your gf.

What courses and or schools are you looking at taking?

Got mine new, its a 3rd Gen with the large bolt handle. If Mossberg sends another bad Mag. Ext. I will just get a Nordic Components.

spencerhut 07-03-2012 12:52 PM

We sell a lot of these and we use them in self defense and 3 gun shooting. They are good guns, but some do have issues. New guns should be soaked down with Slip2000 and run with one weak 1150FPS and one strong 1200+FPS load. Put in the strong load, followed by the weak load. Once the weak load cycles consistently you are ready to rock. Clean it, lightly lube it and off you go.

Replace the factory ext. with a Nordic and put on a Nordic Clamp with the rail for light. The Brownells metal safety is good upgrade also.

CasperSYTFU 07-03-2012 1:10 PM

^Awesome info. So when you say soaked down, can I literally submerge it in Slip2000?
Or are you referring to the Slip2000 carbon killer soak and then Slip2000 lube afterwards?

Thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to follow your advise on the 10th (break outta jail day).

Just over lube it with the Slip2000, don't need to literally soak it. Carbon killer works great on the piston every 1000 rounds or so. Once running these things seem to keep on ticking with very little care.

CasperSYTFU 07-03-2012 3:06 PM

Got it.
Thanks again!

I guess I'll start.

Pretty simple set up: Nordic clamp and rail, Nordic +2 extension tube, TacStar side saddle.

I originally had the Choate pistol grip stock on, but decided it was more aesthetically pleasing in its current form.

who did you forend??

Triad 07-03-2012 10:45 PM

I love this shotgun. I am the only one in my department right now that is currently authorized to carry a semi-auto and I trust my life to this gun.

Did it myself.

You did a really nice job! GO SF! Heh.

MossbergMan 07-04-2012 10:23 AM

I too recommend shooting your SPX "stock" before adding things. That way you'll know if somethng you did caused the gun to fail. I too am on my 2nd SPX. first one was a lemon but Mossberg made it right by replacing it with a new gun. My current SPX is my go to gun for HD/SD and 3 gunning. My Benelli S-90A1 is now a "safe queen".
If all works well I think your choice of accessories is well chosen. Good luck and give us a range report before and after your additions.

Glad the 2nd one is a good one...my 2nd one is a little better than the 1st one with regard to abnormal wear on the mag tube, but still has the occasional shell elevator jam issues and the sight windage adjustment annoys the crap out of me.

Socal858 07-04-2012 10:41 AM

i have the 930 fudd combo with the smoothbore 18.5 and 26" (i think thats how long it is?) field & clays barrel

i clean it minimally and it's eaten a couple thousand rounds with no problems whatsoever. i'm finally planning to mod it out with some nordic components gear and this thread is very motivational!

dc2integra 07-04-2012 5:07 PM

This is definetly my next purchase I hear nothing but good things about the 930.

scglock 07-04-2012 9:59 PM

Nice 930! I got a couple buddies in sytfu. Which range do you go to?

RX_Pilot 07-04-2012 10:42 PM

Bought one on impulse last Saturday. I have another week before it's free to come home. In the meantime, going to read up on the issues and I may be revisiting this post...

Thanks! Nordic looks to make amazing components.

I'll be looking into Chabot and San Leandro Range since I'm about to move closer to that one. Who do you know in the crew?

Let us know how yours goes too!

CasperSYTFU 07-09-2012 3:44 PM

Picking her up tomorrow!

Also ordered the ETA Safety as well as their High-vis Follower.

Now to cycle the hell out of it.

Echidin 07-09-2012 8:09 PM

Congrats! My advice would be to get a variety of loads to determine what works best in your 930. I've heard it's been recommended to break the 930 in using loads equivalent to 3 3/4 drams (1300 to 1350 fps). I wasn't able to find any 3 3/4 drams equivalent target loads at my LGS so I used Winchester AA target loads (3 and 3 1/2 drams equiv.) for the break in and had no problems cycling them. The same with Winchester Super-X rifled slugs, Remington 00 buckshot and Federal Reduced recoil 00 buckshot, as expected.

I did, however, run into cycling issues with Winchester reduced recoil 00 buckshot and Remington Gun Club 8 shot target loads. Surprisingly, I had no issues with the Remington Gun Club 7 1/2 shot target loads.

Good luck, be safe and have fun.

SoCalXD 07-09-2012 8:17 PM

I ran a 1st Gen 930 SPX and ran into the common problems mentioned, which didn't bother me too much... the thing that bothered me the most with it were the Italian made sights... much slower to get a sight picture than the Mossberg GR sights on my M590A1... maybe better for slugs, but too slow for buckshot. I ended up going with a red-dot, which speeded up my scores considerably.

I made the mistake of selling it cheap last year... now I miss it!

CasperSYTFU 07-09-2012 8:47 PM

Wish I caught yours last year! haha

I was looking into the red-dot that doesn't run on batteries. But for now I'll stick to the ghost sights. Broke :)

CasperSYTFU 07-10-2012 9:27 PM

Picked her up today.

Already had the Nordic clamp/rail and handle, and the Streamlight TLR-1s so mounted them up.

The placement of the roll dot on the front wings indicates it is the second gen (not third since the charging handle isn't the larger version).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...9/e7693148.jpg

I've got to say these Nordic components are beautifully made.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...9/ff703cf4.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...9/2cbd72ac.jpg

Also here is a before and after of the charging handles:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...9/94ba0204.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...9/67a24670.jpg

Still waiting on the ETA safety and follower, Bulldog bag, and cleaning kit.
Got to strip it and clean it before I head to the range with some slugs.
Loving it.

mr821907 07-10-2012 9:41 PM

Is your Nordic clamp snug on the mag tube or is there some space?

mr821907 07-10-2012 9:45 PM

Nordic tube. http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...7/IMAG0589.jpg

mr821907 07-10-2012 9:50 PM

Ended up with a different charging handle to better see when I'm out of shells. http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...7/IMAG0594.jpg

It's on there pretty snug. Looks like yours. Torqued down each side on and off until I couldn't hand tighten anymore.

What process did you use on your fore end by the way? Was meaning to ask.
